Out of the two B1-segment SUVs in India, the Punch offers the highest ground clearance of 187 mm.
At the Tata Punch’s core is the 1.2L Revotron petrol engine (1199cc, three-cylinder) that produces up to 87.8 PS of peak power and 115 Nm of peak torque. You can also opt for the Punch in a CNG powertrain, which features the same engine but with slightly lower power and torque figures. The vehicle is available with a manual and AMT transmission.
The top Punch Creative+ offers an even larger 26.03 cm floating infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, LED DRLs, projector headlamps, R16 diamond-cut alloy wheels, rear defogger/wiper, and sunroof on the Creative+ Sunroof trim.

With a higher ground clearance of 185 mm, the Exter should comfortably ride over bumpy terrain. In addition, it comes with one of the most reliable 1.2L naturally aspirated petrol engines, along with the premium fit and finish that Hyundai is renowned for.
The Exter offers one of the most tried and tested petrol engines the country has driven: a 1.2L Kappa naturally-aspirated petrol engine that produces 83PS of peak power and 113.8 Nm of peak torque (5MT, 5AMT with paddle shifters). On the CNG variant, power (69 PS) and torque (95.2 Nm) take a hit, but fuel economy improves from 19.4 km/l to 27.1 km/kg for the manual variant.

Now, let’s move on to the B2 segment compact SUVs in India, which measure less than 3,999 mm in length. The first candidate on the list is the Renault Kiger, which boasts an exceptionally high ground clearance of 205 mm, offers a safe build with four out of five stars in the Global NCAP crash test (for adult occupants) and is available with two engine options.
While there is a 1.0L naturally aspirated petrol engine that produces 72 PS of peak power and 96 Nm of peak torque (5MT, 5AMT), it’s the 1.0L turbo petrol engine, with 100 PS of peak power and 160 Nm of peak torque (5MT, CVT), that’s worth recommending. Some notable features of the compact SUV include a smart access card with a remote engine start, a 20.32 cm floating touchscreen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and tri-octa LED pure vision headlamps.

The Magnite shares its powertrain with Kiger, which includes a 1.0L NA petrol engine (72 PS and 96 Nm) mated with either a five-speed manual or a five-speed AMT and a 1.0L turbo petrol engine (100 PS and 160 Nm) mated with a five-speed manual or a CVT transmission.
The vehicle offers crucial safety features, such as vehicle dynamic control, traction control system, hill start assist, hydraulic brake assist, and anti-lock braking system, right from the base model. What’s good is that the base variant also offers R16-style wheels, functional roof rails (up to 50 kg), rear parking sensors, and a PM 2.5 air filter.
Mahindra XUV 3XO

Known to offer some of the most powerful engines in the segment, the vehicle starts at an attractive price of Rs. 7.49 lakh (ex-showroom) for the baseline MX1 variant. Despite measuring only 3990 mm, the 3XO manages to carve out a 2600 mm wheelbase, which increases the overall stability of the ride.
Even the baseline MX1 variant features the 1.2L mStallion turbo-charged (TCMPFi) engine, which produces 82 kW of peak power and 200 Nm of peak torque, making it more powerful than the baseline variants of the other vehicles on the list. Then there’s the 1.2L mStallion turbo-charged TGDi petrol engine that takes the figures to 96 kW and 230 Nm. Both of these engines are available with a six-speed manual and a six-speed torque converter unit.
For a more powerful engine, opt for the 1.5L turbo diesel engine, which produces 85.8 kW and 300 Nm of torque. This particular engine is available with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed AMT transmission. The base variant already offers features like bi-halogen projector headlamps, six airbags, a front armrest, and reverse parking sensors.

Maruti Suzuki Fronx / Toyota Taisor

While Fronx’s 1.2L K-Series petrol engine produces 89.73 PS of peak power and 113 Nm of peak torque (5MT or 5AMT), the CNG variant produces 77.5 PS and 98.5 Nm (5MT). Then there’s the 1.0L Turbo Boosterjet engine, which offers 100 PS of power and 147 Nm of torque (5MT, 6AT) with Smart Hybrid Technology, providing buyers with a sharper push-back when they press the accelerator.
The Fronx provides plenty of safety features like six airbags, a hill-hold assist, an electronic stability program, and three-point ELR seatbelts. The top trims also offer a nine-inch infotainment screen, a head-up display, a wireless charger, and 360-degree cameras.

Although the turbo-petrol and diesel variants can cost over Rs. 10 lakhs, the next-to-base E Plus variant, priced at Rs. 8.32 lakhs (ex-showroom), offers a sunroof. This particular variant features a 1.2L Kappa petrol engine that produces 83 PS of peak power and 113.8 Nm of peak torque.
Some notable features of this variant include six airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, and hill-assist control. However, it doesn’t include an infotainment system or speakers. It could benefit buyers if the company starts offering the wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay infotainment system as optional accessories with the Venue, as it does for the i20.

Kia Sonet

While the Sonet is based on the same platform and 1.2L petrol engine as the Hyundai Venue, you should be able to get the HTE (O) or the HTK variant, provided you negotiate a discount and a favorable insurance price. You can choose the Sonet over Venue if you want a higher ground clearance, prefer the minimal front fascia of the vehicle, and have a Kia service center nearby.
While the 1.2L petrol engine offers the same power and torque as that on the Venue, it is the features of the HTK variant that you should be more interested in. For instance, the variant offers R16 dual-tone styled wheels, an eight-inch infotainment screen with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, four speakers, steering-mounted audio controls, a rear-view camera, rear-door sunshade curtains, and keyless entry.

Tata Nexon

The baseline trim is equipped with the 1.2L Revotron turbo petrol engine, which produces 88.2 kW of power and 170 Nm of peak torque. The engine comes with a five-speed manual transmission. Besides the capable engine, the Smart+ variant offers features like six airbags, LED headlamps, DRLs, ESP, remote central locking, a 17.78 cm Harman infotainment system with two speakers, and steering-mounted media controls.
Skoda Kylaq

Although Skoda recently announced a price hike for the Kylaq, its base variant — the Classic — could still fit within a budget of Rs. 10 lakh. Among the variant’s key features are six airbags, LED projector headlamps, LED DRLs, 16-inch steel wheels, rear parking sensors, electrically adjustable rear mirrors, and plenty of safety features like ABS, EBD, ECS, and TCS. The base variant doesn’t offer an infotainment system, though.
Besides a perfect safety score, the 1.0L TSI turbo petrol engine (85 kW / 178 Nm), the six-speed manual transmission, and the excellent driving dynamics remain the top reasons to purchase the Skoda Kylaq. It also offers a large boot space of 446 liters, making it easier to load the vehicle for family trips. Further, it has a fuel tank capacity of 45 liters.
Maruti Brezza

Despite being the base model, the LXi MT trim offers six airbags, hill-hold assist, central locking, 60:40 split rear seats, front and rear power windows, and projector headlamps.
Under its shiny hood, the Brezza offers a capable 1.5L petrol engine that produces a peak power of 100.6 PS and a peak torque of 137.1 Nm, making the Brezza feel more responsive than the Venue or Sonet. The engine is available with a five-speed manual transmission on the baseline trim. It also has a large fuel tank capacity of 48 liters.
