In 2024, Qualcomm and MediaTek will release their flagship smartphone processors. A couple of days ago, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 appeared on the popular benchmarking platform Geekbench. Its scores suggested a similar multi-core performance as the Apple M3 silicon. However, most recently, MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400 SoCs appeared on Antutu and Geekbench, and its performance scores have sent a shockwave down the computing industry.

Per the Vietnamese forum Voz.vn, the Dimensity 9400 SoC scores 2,776 points in the single-core and a whopping 11,739 points in the multi-core performance test on Geekbench 6.1. Although the former is lower than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, the latter is higher. In other words, the Dimensity 9400 could provide slightly better day-to-day performance.

Even Antutu’s benchmark scores portray a similar picture. The Dimensity 9400 SoC manages to score 3.4 million points, which is about 11 percent higher than Snapdragon 8 Gen 4’s score. While this happens to be the total score, the CPU and GPU scores also showcase MediaTek’s chip in a better light.

What Does Benchmark Score Mean For You?

Benchmark scores are indicators of a processor and, subsequently, a smartphone’s performance. The score is a representation of the device’s peak performance. However, given that processors slow down over time, getting a phone with a higher benchmark could be better for longevity.

Even so, early benchmarks don’t necessarily mean that the smartphones with these processors will deliver a similar performance. There are several stages of development. And even though the processor for a chip is determined in the early stages, other components, such as the quality and amount of RAM, storage, and vapor chambers for heat dissipation, also have a key role in a phone’s performance.

Could These Chipsets Power Other Devices?

It is great to see that both Qualcomm and MediaTek are pushing their chipsets to outperform the competition. Ultimately, capable processors are what flagship smartphone manufacturers and customers are running after. These could also unlock new features, such as console-level gaming and the ability to run large language models locally.

Further, if the chipsets are so powerful that their benchmark scores are near that of Apple’s M3 silicon, they might be able to power lightweight, productivity-oriented laptops like the MacBook Air. Nonetheless, users should take this information with a pinch of salt, as we are months from the official launch of either of these processors.
