An Android Auto bug is reportedly troubling users with poor audio quality. Several users have taken to Reddit and Google’s forums to express their concern about degraded audio quality, especially after using Google Assistant or making/answering a phone call on the hand-free unit.

Degraded Music Quality On Android Auto

As users start their car and play some music, everything seems to be okay. However, as soon as users use the voice assistant or make a phone call, the sound quality goes down. Users have mentioned that Android Auto sounds muffled. One user writes that the audio quality decreases drastically upon getting any notifications from the mobile, becoming somewhat static-like.

Although restarting the unit fixes the problem for some time, the audio quality degrades again when there is a notification, a phone call, or one uses Google Assistant. The issue doesn’t appear to be widespread, as a 9To5Google report mentions that it affects some aftermarket Android Auto head units.

Google’s Issue Tracker already has a thread about the audio bug, explaining how the units that use “ZLink” software are affected. Users have been facing this issue since late August. For those catching up, ZLink is a software designed to run Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on aftermarket infotainment units.

Previously, the company has said it is investigating the issue, but it has yet to release a fix, and there’s a good chance that the company won’t resolve this issue. Since most units facing the problem seem to be generic Android Auto units, which the company regards as pirated products, it is not in Google’s best interest to fix it. However, on the flip side, these units were functioning well before Google dropped an update.
