Three years ago, Apple made a commendable introduction of the original AirTags, small UWB and Bluetooth power tracking devices that users can attach with anything potentially enough to get lost or stolen and find it. Cut to now, rumors are doing the rounds, according to which we could expect the next-gen AirTags 2 (aptly named) sometime in 2025.

This comes online with what we have heard from other reputed Apple analysts.

Apple AirTags 2 is heading for launch in 2025

Bloomberg’s top Apple analyst, Mark Gurman, took it to his ‘Power On’ newsletter, to mention the next generation of AirTags coming in 2025. Although the newsletter lacks specific details and capabilities, we could collect some bits and pieces from a myriad of previous news stories. According to Gurman, an AirTag 2 bearing model number B599 is being tested at Apple’s Asian manufacturing units. It is scheduled to arrive in the middle of 2025. Given that the original AirTags debuted in April, we are also hoping for a similar launch schedule for second get tags.

The specifics of what it brings to the table are a bit blurry. Gurman points out that Apple should come up with better chips and improved tracking. It remains to be seen if Apple will make the data transmission speed faster or improve its location pinpointing ability for better tracking.

Apple rolled out iOS 17.5 with some updates on par with the original AirTags to discourage stalking attempts, which have gone viral for some time now. It also includes the ability to communicate with not just other AirTags but a fair share of Bluetooth-enabled devices, such as other trackers. More changes are already under discussion, and we should get updates on the same sooner rather than later.

Gurman pointed out that the next-gen AirTags 2 should have better battery life, be optimized for wallets, and have a slightly louder speaker. It remains to be seen exactly what Apple has in mind concerning the upcoming AirTags. Watch this space for more updates on AirTags 2 and a host of upcoming Apple devices.
