Another attempt to bring iMessage closer to Android users failed as the Cupertino-based tech giant blocked Beeper Mini. This recently launched service allowed Android users to chat with iPhone users over an encrypted chat medium. Shortly after the launch, the new platform faced an outage before Apple confirmed it blocked Beeper Mini. Previously, Nothing Chats, an app powered by Sunbird, met the same fate.

Apple Confirms Blocking Beeper Mini

First, Beeper users were getting the “failed to lookup on server: lookup request timed out” error, which the company later acknowledged as an error. Soon after, Apple confirmed to The Verge that it builds its products and services with industry-leading privacy and security technologies designed “to give users control of their data and keep personal information safe.” Further, it blocked Beeper’s iMessage service as it exploited “fake credentials in order to gain access” to Apple’s messaging service.

Beeper Mini’s Techniques For Enabling iMessage Could Pose Security Threats To iPhone Users

The company also commented on Beeper’s techniques for providing blue bubbles to Android users, saying that it poses a significant risk to its users, “including the potential for metadata exposure” and enabling unwanted messages, spam, and phishing attacks. While this statement confirms that Apple shut down Beeper Mini, it also highlights that the service used fake credentials to convince iMessage servers that the communication was coming from Apple’s servers.

Apart from the security and privacy concerns Apple mentions, the company doesn’t want to open its iMessage protocol to Android users simply because it is one of the exclusive perks of being an iPhone user. However, after a letter from Google and other major telecom companies in the United Kingdom, Apple has decided to provide support for the latest RCS standard, which could realistically bridge the gap between iPhones and Android devices.

Beeper Is Still Working To Get The Issue Resolved

Earlier today, Beeper published a tweet saying it is working to fix the issue causing the Beeper Mini outage. “We know how hard this has been for those who loved using Beeper Mini, and we’re extremely sorry for the inconvenience.” The service was launched on December 5, 2023, and after three days of usage, users started facing problems before it was confirmed to be blocked.
