Tech giant Apple has been developing Augmented Reality Glasses for some time. However, the outlook for wearables has dimmed as reports indicate that Apple has abandoned its plans for AR Glasses inspired by Meta’s Ray-Ban-style smart glasses. According to a Bloomberg report, the project has been canceled due to performance issues.

Known by the codename N107, these AR Glasses were designed to resemble regular eyewear and feature a built-in display with iPhone connectivity. Apple also explored the possibility of connecting the AR glasses to a Mac, but it appears that the chipsets in both the iPhone and iMac lacked the necessary power to support the glasses.

Reports indicate that the N107 device was intended to feature projectors capable of displaying images and videos within the field of view of each eye, utilizing lenses that adjusted their tint based on the user’s activities. Gurman suggests that Apple attempted to modify the design to incorporate desired features; however, persistent battery life challenges ultimately led the tech company to abandon the project entirely.

Apple is not the only company in the race; Meta has also been developing similar glasses and may now be pleased with Apple’s decision to cancel its plans. This development could allow Meta to maintain its dominance in the market through 2025 unless Samsung introduces its Android-powered XR headset featuring a Qualcomm chipset, which could pose significant competition.

Apple’s worries extend beyond just augmented reality glasses; its ambitious Vision Pro project has also fallen short of the company’s expectations for success. Customers who invested $3,499 in the Vision Pro are not utilizing the device as often as Apple had hoped. The company has faced challenges in identifying a new successful product category, having abandoned its electric vehicle plans a year ago. However, the potential launch of a more affordable version of the Vision Pro could provide a fresh opportunity for success if it resonates with consumers.
