TL; DR
- According to a LinkedIn post published by IDC India, Vivo occupies the first spot in India’s top five smartphone brands.
- On the second spot is the Korean tech conglomerate Samsung, which saw the biggest decline in year-over-year shipments.
- Oppo and Apple secure the third and fourth positions, and they are the only brands to experience growth in market share.
- Xiaomi, on the other hand, is facing intense competition in the offline retail channels.
Although the Indian smartphone market faced a slowdown in January 2025, the Cupertino-based tech giant Apple experienced a strong year-over-year growth. Among the top five smartphone brands operating in the country, three experienced a decline in year-over-year shipments. While Xiaomi still secures the third spot in worldwide shipments, the brand hasn’t been doing well in India.

Top 5 Smartphone Brands (In Terms Of Shipments), January 2025

Vivo
According to a LinkedIn post published by IDC India, Vivo occupies the first spot in India’s top five smartphone brands. Despite a year-over-year decline of 8.1% in shipments, its diverse portfolio of devices (in the entry-level, mid-range, and flagship segments) and competitive prices helped vivo reach the top spot in January 2025.
Samsung
On the second spot is the Korean tech conglomerate Samsung. Just recently, the company released its latest flagship series, the Galaxy S25 (reviews of which are available in the SmartPrix reviews section). Despite the flagship release and a price cut on the affordable models, Samsung saw a year-over-year decline of 19.5%, the most any brand witnessed.

Oppo
In third place is Oppo, with a 5.9% increase in year-over-year shipments. With relatively affordable flagships and plenty of mid-range and affordable models infused with AI-based features, the company has managed to increase its market share in January 2025.
Apple

On the fourth place is Apple. The Cupertino giant secured a place consecutively in the top five brands (in terms of shipments) for five months. It is the only company, other than Oppo, to see a positive year-over-year shipments growth of 11.7%.
Even though the company makes and sells flagship products, the launch of the iPhone 16 and discounts on the older models should have helped the brand see a strong start to the year.

Xiaomi Faces Immense Competition From Other Chinese Brands
The fifth company on the list is Realme, which witnessed a year-over-year decline of 5.3%. As stated in a report by Money Control, the popular Chinese brand Xiaomi is facing a hard time in the market. The company led the Indian smartphone market for five years (from 2017 to 2022), but according to IDC’s latest data, the company has slipped to the seventh position in January 2025.
Analysts suggest that the decline in sales and shipments could be due to stiff competition from brands like Vivo, Oppo, and Samsung in the offline market. While the brand is pushing in the flagship segment, it seems to be falling behind in the mid-range and entry-level segment, where other manufacturers are attracting customers. Further, the company has also gone through corporate restructuring in the recent past.
