Soon, a future iPhone Ultra (or iPhone Pro Max) will capture spatial photos and videos to be displayed on Apple Vision Pro. Turns out this information comes from a reputable source which puts gravitas that a future iPhone will support spatial photography.

The tipster (via MacRumors) mentioned how the launch of the future iPhone Ultra will lead the market to rethink how a mobile photo takes photos and videos. This is all thanks to spatial photography which isn’t 2D unlike today but rather 3D with the input of multiple sensors including depth mapping.

According to Apple’s press release for the Vision Pro headset, spatial photography is designed to let the user ‘see into a moment’. It puts incredible depth in the photos and videos allowing the users to relive the moment and especially with Vision Pro, the effect is compounded as the media displays life-scale size for an immersive experience. Vision Pro adds Spatial Audio too that transports the users to a different realm as they browse through the catalog of photos and videos via iCloud witnessing the same in spectacular detail.

iPhone Spatial Photography

Coming back to the iPhone, the iPhone 14 Pro Max does support spatial photography, however, it isn’t sufficient enough. Future iPhone Ultra models will bring multiple sensors onboard analyzing various data points while a camera sensor placed on the opposite side of the rear panel on an iPhone will ensure enough separation in the shots for a stereoscopic effect.

It will be built on the existing rear cam configurations including ultrawide, wide-angle, telephoto, Adaptive True Tone flash, and LiDar scanner plus the sensors needed for spatial photography. When I say iPhone Ultra, the moniker has been popping up on the internet for quite a while. It was earlier expected to replace Pro Max, although it won’t be doing that at least this year with the iPhone 15 launch.

However, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says a high-end device named iPhone Ultra is due to arrive next year with the iPhone 16 series that will supersede the iPhone 16 Pro Max. On the other hand, Apple Vision Pro is expected to make its launch in early 2024 although dates aren’t available just yet.
