In 2023, Apple launched the iPhone 15 Series which included four models- iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. While the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus were powered by the A16 Bionic chipset, the pro models were powered by the A17 Pro SoC. This led to a major differentiation between the Pro and Non-Pro models in terms of performance. The announcement received a mixed response as many weren’t happy with this differentiation as only Pro Models could support Apple Intelligence.
In 2024, Apple seems to be correcting this by powering all four iPhone 16 Models with the same A18 Bionic SoC. This means the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be powered by an A18 Bionic chipset.

Entire iPhone 16 Series to be powered by A18 Bionic chipset?

According to a Code discovered by Nicolas Alvarez in Apple’s backend, Apple is planning to announce four iPhone 16 models in 2024 and all four will have similar A18 chipset. The code mentions new model numbers that are not associated with existing Apple devices and the feature numbering scheme that the brand uses for flagship phones.
The code has the following iPhone identifiers-
- iPhone 17, 1
- iPhone 17, 2
- iPhone 17, 3
- iPhone 17, 4
- iPhone 17, 5

All four begin with the same number indicating Apple’s plans to use the same SoC for all models. Last year, for iPhone 15 identifiers were different-
- iPhone 15- iPhone 15, 4
- iPhone 15 Plus- iPhone 15,5
- iPhone 15 Pro- iPhone 16, 1
- iPhone 15 Pro Max- iPhone 16,2
Since iPhone 15 and 15 Plus had A16 chipsets, the identifiers were 15, 4, and 15,5 but since iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max had A17 chipsets, the identifiers were 16, X.

This is a strong hint about Apple bringing all four iPhone 16 versions with the same A18 chipset in 2024. Since five devices have been listed for 2024, the fifth one could be for a future iPhone SE model, but there’s no confirmation about that.
While speculations are rife that the iPhone 16 series will be powered by A18 chipset, Apple might differentiate between Pro and Non-Pro models by naming the chipset as A18 and A18 Pro. A18 SoC with a smaller number of GPU scores might be used for the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, while A18 Pro with a better GPU might power the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max.
But since all the models will have an A18 chipset, Apple Intelligence will be available to all irrespective of the model. Currently, only iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max support Apple Intelligence.
Since the launch will be earlier this time (mostly in September), we will know more soon.
