Looks like things are going to change when it comes to getting your iPhone fixed. The update comes directly from Apple according to whom, it is easing a critical restriction that would restrict functionalities on iPhones after getting repaired.

According to Apple’s newsletter, the Cupertino-based giant will introduce a feature to accommodate used parts during iPhone repairs starting this fall. It includes cameras, batteries, and screens, to name a few.

At present, you can get your iPhone fixed at an authorized service center or a third-party store with three options – either use expensive original parts, get used parts from other iPhones, or integrate parts manufactured by a third party. Although using genuine (but expensive) results in restoring all the functionalities intended, using the other two methods would trigger a warning that you aren’t using genuine parts for repair.

What it means is that Apple technically restricts that part’s functionalities. For instance, the TrueTone feature on iPhone displays won’t work once the display is changed or repaired even if it is from the same iPhone or older versions. It is because of a process called ‘parts pairing’ where Apple assigns parts of its iPhones to work in congregation with other parts. Thus, when a different part is added to the configuration, it breaks its functionalities by disabling some features.

With the latest change in mind regarding iPhone repairs, you should be able to use parts from older iPhones to work without changing any of their original functionalities. It won’t just improve iPhone usability but put less strain on the owner’s pockets as they no longer have to rely on genuine replacement parts or restricted functionalities with older parts.

Note that the change will kick into action this fall and will be applicable on iPhone 15 and newer models. It remains to be seen if the change reflects on older generations of iPhones as well.
