TL;DR

  • Every year, eligible pensioners submit their Jeevan Pramaan or Annual Live Certificate to the government of India to continue receiving their pension payments.
  • Fraudsters are sending pensioners fake messages (impersonating the government of India) about updating their details to receive future pension payments.

As the deadline for submitting the Jeevan Pramaan certificate is approaching, Indian scammers have come up with a new way to gather the personal details of pensioners. According to a warning issued by the government of India, scammers are sending pensioners fake messages, asking them to enter their details, and then using the information to commit identity theft or financial fraud.

Scammers Are Taking Advantage Of The Approaching Live Certificate Deadline

Every year, eligible pensioners submit their Jeevan Pramaan or Annual Live Certificate to the government of India to continue receiving their pension payments. This year, the submission deadline is November 30, 2024. Given that pensioners would have already begun with the process, scammers are taking advantage of the situation by sending them fake messages.

Don’t Respond To Text Or WhatsApp Messages Asking For Sensitive Documents

As previously mentioned, fraudsters are sending pensioners fake messages (impersonating the government of India) about updating their details to receive future pension payments. In the message, there is some sort of a link or form that redirects them to a portal that asks for citizens’ Jeevan Pramaan certificate, along with other sensitive information like bank account details, PPO numbers, and so on.

As a pensioner fills out the form with all the information asked for, the scammers then use the information to commit identity theft or, worse, financial fraud. They could issue fake identity cards in the individual’s name, use the information to avail of certain services in the pensioner’s name, or access their bank account. The scammers could also use the personal information to extort money out of the individuals.

Tell Pensioners At Your Home About The Issue

To safeguard pensioners against the ongoing pension scam, the first thing to do is make them aware of it. Explaining the ongoing scenario to the pensioners and how scammers can send messages impersonating the government of India is very important. Even otherwise, no one should click on any suspicious links (neither on messages nor on WhatsApp) sent from an unknown number.

Further, the submission of certificates should only take place from the official government portals designated for the same. Avoid clicking on any fishy links, and always check the URL to confirm whether the site belongs to the government of India or not.
