Volkswagen, the German automobile manufacturer, has announced plans to integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its cars. The automaker revealed its vision at CES 2024 in Las Vegas of integrating an AI-powered chatbot in all models that already run its IDA voice assistant. The feature should be available to cars in Europe first.

Why Would One Need An AI-Chatbot In Cars?

ChatGPT Plus

Usually, AI-based chatbots, like ChatGPT, are preferred by users when researching a topic. With the correct prompt, ChatGPT can provide a detailed overview of even the most complicated scientific concepts. However, there isn’t an immediate use case for a car chatbot.

Clarifying this, Volkswagen says that the chatbot will enrich conversations, interact in intuitive language, and provide vehicle-specific information without the need to touch or press anything. Perhaps it could also figure out internal issues and suggest solutions. The company also mentions that OpenAI won’t get access to users’ driving stats, nor will they have to install a third-party app.

The AI-Chatbot Runs On Carence’s Chat Pro, Powered By OpenAI

The AI-based chatbot runs on Cerence’s Chat Pro product, which can address about 10,000 questions related to the vehicle, brand, and relevant operations. A large language model from OpenAI powers it. It’s not exactly ChatGPT, but it offers similar abilities. Volkswagen will integrate the model into its IDA voice assistant, which is currently used to control the infotainment system.

Other automakers that already have an AI-based chatbot in place include Mercedes-Benz. Tesla also plans to integrate xAI’s Grok assistant into its vehicles. Usually, car voice assistants can perform tasks such as enabling/disabling climate control, opening/closing the sunroof, etc. However, with the AI-powered chatbot, Volkswagen envisions to take things to the next level.

All New Volkswagen Models Will Get The AI-Powered Voice Assistant In Europe

Regarding models, the voice assistant will be available across Volkwagen’s lineup, including Tiguan, Passat, and Golf. Further, it will also make its way to the automaker’s lineup of EVs, including ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, and ID.3. The company is also considering a similar route for vehicles in the United States. Still, it has yet to reveal plans for it.
