TL;DR
  • Elon Musk has launched a new messaging platform, XChat, with end-to-end encryption.
  • Along with sending messages, it will come with capabilities for audio and video calling, & sharing photos/videos.
  • This platform may intensify competition with WhatsApp & Telegram.

Following the acquisition of the microblogging platform Twitter, now rebranded as X, Elon Musk has introduced a new instant messaging service called XChat. This platform features end-to-end encryption, self-destructing messages, and file-sharing capabilities similar to those of WhatsApp. Musk’s new service is likely to heighten tensions for Mark Zuckerberg, as its growing popularity could potentially disrupt WhatsApp’s dominance. However, it is important to note that Musk’s instant messaging platform is currently in its beta phase, with a stable version expected to be released soon.

Elon Musk announced this instant messaging service via his X account. In his post, Musk stated, ‘The new XChat is being launched, which provides options for encryption, disappearing messages, and file sharing. Additionally, it supports audio and video calls. It is designed with Bitcoin-style encryption, representing a completely new architecture.’

Stiff Competition to WhatsApp?

Musk’s platform is presently in its beta phase, accessible only to a select group of users. Once testing gets done, it will roll out to the general public in the coming months. However, the company has not disclosed any launch date or timeline for this platform. This instant messaging service, featuring encryption capabilities of the X platform, is set to compete directly with Meta’s WhatsApp. Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, consistently asserts that user privacy is safeguarded through end-to-end encryption in his messaging service. Similarly, Elon Musk’s new platform will offer users the same level of security.

How to access XChat?

XChat is presently undergoing beta testing, making it accessible only to a limited number of users and developers at this stage. Furthermore, XChat is exclusively available to paid subscribers of X. It remains to be determined if X will eventually allow free users access with a restricted feature set to broaden its user base. Additionally, will Grok AI be incorporated into the messaging application in the future, similar to the integration seen with Meta and WhatsApp? This remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, Musk’s post hints that XChat will roll out on Android, iOS, and web platforms.

What does end-to-end Encryption mean?

The end-to-end encryption feature ensures that any communication is exclusively between the sender and the recipient, and not even the company can read it. WhatsApp has faced various questions about this feature, and the company has consistently asserted that once the sender transmits the message, it is in an encrypted format. Subsequently, it is decrypted and received by the recipient. During this process, even if someone gains access to the message, the content of the sent message remains unknown. This is why communication protected by end-to-end encryption is considered secure.

Bitcoin-level encryption enhances security. Typically, blockchain technology underpins Bitcoin, making it nearly impossible to breach. In addition to WhatsApp, instant messaging services such as Telegram and Signal also assert that they offer end-to-end encryption capabilities.
