Most of what Apple brings to the table becomes a norm and is eventually followed industry-wide. The notch became the red hot thing of the smartphone world after Apple’s iPhone X. AMS which supplies optical sensors for Face ID, has announced a new in-display TCS3701 sensor. Let’s dive into the details.

The New sensor: Implementation and Implication

Apple’s supplier AMS calls it as “behind OLED”. The TCS3701 sensor placed behind the smartphone’s screen consists of an RGB light and IR proximity sensor. It could sense the intensity of ambient light without a hiccup using AMS’s home-bred algorithms.

Thus the sensor could be relocated from the notch island to below the screen. The smartphone manufacturers like Apple and Google can eliminate the bezel altogether. In other words, this would result in a higher screen-to-body ratio.

However, there’s a catch. You might know that the Face ID consists of several different components like an infrared camera, a dot projector, flood illuminator, and an ambient light sensor. 2019 or upcoming iPhones could still feature a smaller notch as the AMS sensor only helps in removing a couple of sensors. Others are likely to be housed in the notch space.

So, future smartphones could boast larger screen real estate due to such innovations. If and when this in-display facial recognition becomes reality through an upcoming iPhone, sooner or later other brands would also implement it. What do you think of the new technology?
