TL;DR

  • While Google has already started running ads on YouTube Shorts, it plans to increase the length of the portrait videos.
  • While the current limit of a Short is 60 seconds, YouTube is going to extend it to three minutes or 180 seconds.

In 2024, short-form content has been among the most engaging ways to bring in an audience, both for content creators and businesses. According to a RouteNote report from February 2024, YouTube Shorts get over 70 billion daily views. Although it was a relatively new format, the audience adapted really well to it.

Creators Can Upload 180-Seconds “Long” Shorts Starting October 15

While Google has already started running ads on YouTube Shorts, it plans to increase the length of the portrait videos that users watch day and night. While the current limit of a Short is 60 seconds, YouTube is going to extend it to three minutes or 180 seconds. The change will come into effect on October 15, 2024.

According to Google, this is one of the “top requested feature by creators.” Given that users have become habitual in consuming short-form content, and creators have learned how to hook their audience, it only makes sense to increase the maximum duration to 180 seconds. Eventually, longer Shorts would contribute to creators by increasing their watch time.

The change will apply to videos that are “square or taller in aspect ratio.” Further, YouTube will also show comments on the screen while viewing a short video, much like comments show up on livestreams. Other changes like hollow buttons for better visibility, lesser description lines, and a more streamlined Shorts player are also on their way.
