Google grants ₹135 Crore to India for its Covid fight

Google has extended a hand to India in its fight against the current COVID crisis. The search giant has announced Rs. 135 Crore in funding to front line organizations such as Give India and UNICEF for medical supplies and other aids including dissemination of critical information.  

The second wave of the coronavirus pandemic has been worsening with every passing day in India. Thus aggravating the stock and supply of oxygen, medicines, and various medical equipment. So, to support the country to come out of this dire situation, the tech titan has come forward.

Mr. Sundar Pichai, Google CEO, tweeted about the relief fund —

The company has assigned an amount of Rs. 20 crore to two different institutions namely GiveIndia and UNICEF through its philanthropic subsidiary Google Org.

GiveIndia works on the society front by providing financial assistance to hard-hit families with their daily expenses. UNICEF, on the other hand, works to procure and offer medical supplies and testing equipment to remote locations of India.

Google India Head, Sanjay Gupta said in a statement, “So far more than 900 Googlers have contributed 3.7 Crore INR for organizations supporting high-risk and marginalized communities.” The said amount is a part of the ₹135 crore corpus.

Google has also declared an additional Rs. 112 crore for offering Ad Grants to the authorities and NGOs spreading public health awareness. The Silicon Valley giant will employ its Search, Maps, YouTube, and Ads units to run the health information campaigns. It will include the spread of vaccine information in various Indian languages to reach the audience along with a focus on reducing misinformation.

The California-based company also said that they are working intensively with the Indian Ministry of Health, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and other bodies to provide help and tools to fight against the current predicament.
