Google is reportedly rolling out two major updates for its Find My Device application. A first and major update is the capability of the app to help Android users locate devices used by their other family members including kids. If this update does roll out, parents will easily be able to track their kids’ phones and thus reach them easily. This can come in handy not only during emergencies but also when kids have gone somewhere they were not allowed to. The other update is the Find My Device app supporting UWB trackers soon.

This will be the first-ever series of updates for the Find My Device app ever since it was launched.

Find My Device App Updates

Founder of APKMirror Artem Russakovski aka AtremR on X shared a post that confirms this update for Android devices. It includes some screenshots that show how the new feature will work in the Find My Device application. The updated app has a dedicated tab to show “Family Devices”. This means, all your family members’ in-use devices will be tracked through the app. The tab doesn’t include devices like trackers that have been shared between family members.

This new section is live by default for the X user in the Find My Device app version v3.1.078-1. The list shows the names of family members and the list of their active devices.

A report by Android Authority claims that this tab will only show those Android devices that have been attached to supervised accounts that the user manages despite being called Family Devices.

If users have a host of supervised devices, they will be sorted alphabetically with devices grouped by account.

Find My Device to support UWB Trackers

At present, the Find My Device app only supports limited tracking of a nearby device using Bluetooth or other nearby devices. It doesn’t allow the users to look for devices directionally and take one towards them. It can only play a sound when a tracker is nearby.

However, this will change too as the latest update of the Find My app shows hints of Google working on expanded support for directional tracking. There are references to Ultra Wide Band which means the Find My Devices app might soon support UWB and other libraries to locate far away devices and locate them directionally. It will use the device’s sensors and APIs to interact with information.

Both these features are reportedly still in the developmental stage with no information regarding their release timeline. Google may or may not announce these features but if it does, they will first arrive with a beta version allowing a section of users to test how successful it is.
