At the I/O developer conference on Tuesday, Google announced that it is working on implementing advanced security measures to protect Android users from telephone scams. Google is testing a new call monitoring feature that will alert users of potential fraudulent activity during calls and prompt them to end the communication.

The new feature, powered by Gemini Nano, is set to offer real-time alerts during phone calls in case it detects conversation patterns often linked to scams. For example, users will be alerted if a caller who identifies as a “bank representative” requests urgent fund transfers, asks for payment with a gift card, or seeks personal information such as card PINs or passwords—unusual requests from legitimate banks.

The detection and alert system operates directly on the user’s device, ensuring their conversations remain private. This feature protects the user’s privacy without compromising it.

Google has not provided a timeline for the availability of the scam detection feature. It has stated that users must opt-in to use it and promised to disclose more details “later this year.”

Last October, a Global Anti-Scam Alliance report revealed that individuals collectively incurred losses exceeding $1 trillion due to fraudulent activities, underscoring the pressing necessity for heightened protective measures.

Will I get Google’s AI-powered scam call detection feature on my Android phone?

Seems unlikely. While this technology’s potential user base is huge, its applicability could be restricted by compatibility. Gemini Nano is only supported by the Google Pixel 8 Pro and Samsung S24 series. So, if you use a phone other than this flagship from Google and Samsung, your phone is unlikely to support it. When Google rolls out this new feature, more phones with Gemini Nano might become available.
