Google is gearing up for some exciting months ahead. The brand has already been teasing the launch of Pixel 8a during I/O 2024. Other than the annual Pixel 9 Series that will launch in October, Google is also planning to launch a new foldable device with a changed name.

It might reset the fan’s perceptions by skipping on Google Pixel Fold 2 and renaming it as the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Pixel 9 Pro Fold is expected to become a member of the Pixel 9 Series and launch during the annual hardware reveal event in October 2024. We at Smartprix were the first to share exclusive renders for Pixel Fold 2, click on the link below to view renders.

This time the Google Pixel 9 Series is expected to include not two but four devices- Google Pixel 9, Google Pixel 9 Pro, Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and Google Pixel Pro 9 XL. The Pixel 9 Pro is expected to be a smaller size, which will be similar to the Pixel 9 but with some spec upgrades to make it Pro. All four devices will be powered by Tensor G4 chipset.

Reports claim that this transition from Pixel Fold 2 to Pixel Fold 9 Pro happened recently during the internal Google Communications meeting. A report by Android Authority claims that Google has reorganized its naming strategy for Pixel devices in the following way-

  • Pixel 9 has been codenamed “tokay”
  • Pixel 9 Pro has been codenamed “caiman”
  • Pixel 9 Pro Fold has been codenamed “comet”
  • Pixel 9 Pro XL has been codenamed “Komodo”

The names have been validated by certain softwares that have been made for Google devices. Earlier Pixel Fold 2 was codenamed “comet” which has now been assigned to “Pixel 9 Pro Fold”. While nothing is concrete as of now things might change before launch, but if Google does go ahead with this naming, it would mean a complete departure from the first-generation Pixel Fold.
