During today’s I/O keynote, CEO Sundar Pichai announced a cool new feature called “Ask Photos.” Google Photos already does a pretty good job with search, but Google is taking it up a notch with Gemini. It’s dropping this summer, and it’s going to make the app even smarter at figuring out what you want, all thanks to AI.

Pichai asked, “Hey, what’s my license plate number again?” Usually, you would have to search through a bunch of car photos to find it. But with Ask Photos, it’s like magic. The app recognizes which car you’re referring to based on its presence in your photos and other factors. Then, it quickly provides the license plate number along with a confirming picture.

Pichai also demonstrated how users can delve deeper into their memories. For example, he asked, “Show me how Lucia’s swimming has improved over time,” and Gemini promptly assembled various photos from different years, showcasing Lucia’s progress in swimming.

Ask Photos will be available on Google Photos this summer, and there are more features in the pipeline. Pichai hinted at future developments. To illustrate the popularity of Google Photos, he revealed that there are 6 billion uploads every day – that’s a massive amount of memories stored on Google’s servers.
