With the launch of the Google Pixel 8 series, the search giang promised to deliver seven years of feature drop updates for both the Pixel 8 and the Pixel 8 Pro. The Pixel 8 Pro has been rocking Gemini Nano, Google’s AI for on-device generative AI, since launch. After heavy criticism from the media and the community, Google is finally bringing Gemini Nano to the Pixel 8.

The Pixel 8 has been lacking Gemini Nano due to some unspecified “hardware restrictions” as per Google. This sparked a lot of heat in the community. Since both devices have identical hardware, Google was accused of creating artificial gaps between the two devices by restricting Gemini Nano to only the Pro model.

Despite the initial disparity, Google has responded to consumer feedback by deciding to bring Gemini Nano to the Pixel 8, thus making its on-device AI model more widely accessible. The company announced this decision in a community post on Google Support, stating that Gemini Nano will be rolled out to the Pixel 8 as a developer option.

Gemini Nano will open doors to new AI features including an AI summarize feature in the Recorder app, personalized on-device assistants, offline language translation, advanced proofreading and grammar correction, an advanced Smart Reply feature in Gboard, and more.

These features are just the beginning, and we can expect more use cases to emerge over the coming months. The rollout of these features is slated for the QPR3 Feature Drop, expected for release in June 2024.
