Google is set to revolutionize its search experience with the introduction of an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered search experience and several feature enhancements to handle tougher, complex queries. This announcement, made at the annual developer conference Google I/O 2024 on May 14, marks a significant step forward for the tech giant in reimagining its flagship search product in the generative AI era.

The AI-powered search experience, named AI Overviews, is set to roll out to all consumers in the United States this week, with plans for global expansion in the near future. This move aims to provide users with quick AI-generated summaries of topics, along with links for deeper exploration, right at the top of search results. Users can tap on the “show more” option to ask follow-up questions or choose from suggested questions to enter a conversational window.

How does AI Overviews work?

Powered by a custom Gemini model built specifically for Google Search, AI Overviews harnesses Gemini’s advanced capabilities, including multi-step reasoning, planning, and multimodality. According to Liz Reid, the head of Google Search, users will soon be able to adjust their AI Overviews, simplifying or expanding the language to suit their needs.

The introduction of AI Overviews follows Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE), an opt-in experiment introduced last year, which has seen billions of queries answered, including longer and more complex ones. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google parent firm Alphabet, expressed optimism about the increase in user satisfaction with this new search experience.

Moreover, Google is leveraging Gemini’s multi-step reasoning capabilities to enhance its meal and trip planning features directly within Search. Users can now ask complex questions in a single query, such as finding the best yoga studios in a specific location with discounts for new members. These capabilities are currently available for English language users in the United States through Search Labs.

AI-organised pages

The tech giant also announced AI-organized results pages, making it easier for consumers to explore new ideas and topics. These pages will offer results categorized under unique AI-generated headlines, providing users with a wide range of perspectives and content types.

With these updates, Google aims to reimagine the search experience, combining the best of Search with Gemini’s advanced capabilities. As Google continues to innovate, users can expect simplified, researched, planned, and brainstormed searches, making information discovery more intuitive and efficient.
