What began as an experimental tool inside Google Labs has steadily grown into one of the tech giant’s most promising AI-powered learning platforms. NotebookLM, short for Notebook Language Model, was originally developed to help users digest complex information from long documents using AI-generated summaries, audio explainers, and mind maps. Now, Google is taking the platform a step further with a major update: the launch of Video Overviews and a redesigned, more flexible Studio interface.
AI Video Overviews for Learning
NotebookLM was built to act as a kind of personal research assistant, pulling insights directly from user-uploaded content like PDFs, lecture notes, or research papers. Unlike traditional search or summarization tools, NotebookLM anchors its responses in your documents, letting you ask questions and get tailored answers or overviews, all based on your own materials.

Over time, it has added capabilities such as mind mapping, audio summaries, and structured study guides. The new Video Overviews feature transforms written content into narrated, slide-style videos. These aren’t full-fledged motion videos, but AI-generated visual explainers that combine narration with diagrams, key quotes, images, and summaries, again, all sourced from your own files.

The goal is to make abstract or dense information easier to understand through a multimodal format. Importantly, users can guide how the video is generated. You can specify your level of understanding, focus on certain sections, or define the audience.
Currently, Video Overviews are available in English, with support for more languages in the pipeline.
Revamped Studio Panel

Alongside Video Overviews, NotebookLM is also getting a revamped Studio panel. Previously, users were limited to one output per type per notebook, meaning only one mind map or one audio summary per file. That’s now changing.
The updated Studio lets users create and store multiple versions of any content type, all in one place: Audio Overviews, Video Overviews, Mind Maps, or Reports.
