Out of all the iPhone features that Apple flaunts, privacy is the one that often takes center stage. The Cupertino-based tech giant has made several advertisements on the same, claiming that iPhones provide top-notch privacy and data security, and one of the most crucial aspects of that is activity tracking by apps.

For starters, you can control whether an app can access your iPhone’s microphone or camera. To kick things up a notch, Apple also allows users to decide whether they want an app to track their activity “across other companies’ apps and websites for the purposes of advertising or sharing with data brokers.”

Select “Ask App Not to Track” When Prompted

In iOS 14.5 or later, apps must ask for permission before tracking a user’s activity across other companies’ apps and websites. When asked, select the “Ask App Not to Track” option in the dialog box that reads, “Your data will be used to deliver personalized ads to you.” As Apple mentions on a support page, users can still use the full capabilities of an app regardless of whether they allow the app to track their activity.

Once you select this option, the developer cannot access the system advertising identifier (IDFA), which is what companies use to track a particular user’s activities. Further, developers cannot access details like users’ email addresses or any other information that might be used as an identifier.

How To Disable Tracking For All Apps?

If you don’t want to handle individual app requests for permission to track, head to Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking and disable the “Allow Apps to Request to Track” option. Once users disable the feature, your iPhone will treat all the apps that would have asked for the tracking permission “as if you tapped Ask App Not to Track.”

You can, obviously, use the Tracking menu to decide which apps you want to track your activities, but if you’re concerned about your privacy, we recommend turning the feature off entirely.
