Lunar Lake Processors To Feature Hybrid Cluster Design

Intel's seven components

The SoC consists of seven key components, including the package, memory, compute tile, base tile, Platform Controller Tile, and the Stiffener. In addition to the components, the Lunar Lake chips will feature an eight-core hybrid design consisting of four performance cores and an equal number of efficiency cores. The processor runs alongside the Xe2 GPU with eight ray tracing units.

Together, the SoC can deliver up to 120 TOPS, 5 TOPS from the CPU, 67 TOPS from the GPU, and 48 TOPS from the dedicated Neural Processing Unit.

The Lunar Lake Processors To Feature Lion Cove P And Skymont E Architecture

Intel Xe 2 GPU

The processor’s performance cores feature Intel’s Lion Cove P-Core architecture. The new technology improves single-threaded performance by about 14 percent over the Redwood Cove cores. Regarding performance per watt, the P cores provide 15 percent improved performance.

On the other hand, the efficiency cores feature Sjymont E-Core architecture, which offers 38 percent IPC enhancements and 68 percent improvements in floating-point tasks. This year, the power management settings within the SoC have three modes: efficiency, balance, and performance.

Processors Will Be Combined With UP To 32GB Of LPDDR5X RAM

While the computer tile uses TSMC’s N3B manufacturing process, the Platform Controller Tile uses TSMC’s N6 process. The processor will ship along with 16GB and 32GB of LPDDR5X RAM. Regarding the processor’s NPU, it offers a significant AI processing boost with a total processing power of 48 TOPS, which is more than four times the processing power of Meteor Lake’s NPU.

As far as wireless connectivity is concerned, the Lunar Lake processor supports Wi-Fi 7, which enables higher download/upload speed via supported routers and computers. For versatile wired connectivity, the processor also supports Thunderbolt 4 (up to three ports).

As the company announced previously, the Intel Lunar Lake SoCs will be launched in the third quarter of 2024. The chipset will be available in the next quarter.
