Days after an iPhone 15 Pro Max bend test and teardown showed mixed results, a fierce face-off between iPhone 15 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has shed light on how these phones fare against each other. Popular YouTuber PhoneBuff compared the phones in a series of tests from face drop to backdrop and corner drop to find which one cuts and the results are in.

Durability Test: iPhone 15 Pro Max Vs. Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

The first test was the back-facing drop where both the phones were dropped from a waist-level height on a concrete surface. Upon drop, the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s back glass shattered on impact. It didn’t chip off but the glass got way more damaged than the Galaxy S23 Ultra which suffered minimal damage. The back glass on the phone was fine elsewhere.

About the construction, Galaxy S23 Ultra uses an aluminum frame with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus on the front and back for protection. On the other hand, the iPhone 15 Pro Max uses a Ceramic Shield at the front along with a titanium frame for strength and light-weightness.

Moving on, we had a second test wherein the phones were dropped on their corners. Although both the phones suffered catastrophic damage on one of their corners, the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s titanium frame remains undamaged while the S23 Ultra’s aluminium frame shows more damage. No doubt Apple took the lead at this stage. Note that both the phones remain functional throughout the tests which is a good test given the fact that you are paying a premium for these models.

The third test was a drop with the screen facing down. Will the Victus 2 or the Ceramic Shield survive? Turns out both the phones suffered screen damage although the S23 Ultra took more damage due to its curved panel. iPhone 15 Pro Max, on the other hand, took slightly less damage even after the fall. Turns out its flat display makes quite a stride compared to a curved display. However, slightly thicker bezels on the corners would’ve prevented any further damage.

PhoneBuff’s final test saw dropping the phone’s display facing down on a steel surface from a higher point. Turns out the shattered back glass on the iPhone 15 Pro Max started chipping away and took more damage than in previous tests. On the other hand, Galaxy S23 Ultra looked almost the same as it did after the last test which is a good thing.

What do you think about these drop tests? Do you think the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has the edge over the Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max or it is the opposite? Let us know in the comments below.
