Apple launched the iPhone 17e a few days ago, immediately making the iPhone 16 look overpriced (sort of). Newer chip, double the storage, bigger battery — all on the cheaper device. Nobody saw that coming, least of all iPhone 16 (review) owners who paid full price eight months ago.
Pick up the iPhone 16 though, and it reminds you pretty quickly why it still costs more. Two cameras versus one. Dynamic Island versus a notch that’s been around since Jio was still giving away free data to Indian users. A dedicated Camera Control button.
Neither phone is an obvious winner. Both sit under ₹70,000. Both run iOS 26. Both will comfortably last you four or five years. But they’re genuinely built for different people — and working out which one suits you comes down to a handful of things that most comparison articles skip past too quickly.
Been going through both phones section by section for the last few days — design, display, performance, cameras, software, battery. Here’s the full picture.

Look at the top of the iPhone 16 and you’ll see the Dynamic Island — a pill cutout that shows notifications, timers, and live activities in a actually useful way. The iPhone 17e hasn’t made that jump yet. It’s still got the notch, and honestly, it’s 2026 — nobody expected to still be talking about this.
Flip them over and the differences continue. The 16 has a vertical dual-camera pill on the back — it looks more purposeful and premium. The 17e keeps it simple with a single circular bump, which is cleaner but also a dead giveaway that you’re holding the budget option. Speaking of buttons, the iPhone 16 also packs a dedicated Camera Control button on the right edge — a handy shortcut for launching the camera and triggering Visual Intelligence. The 17e skips it entirely.
Color variety is another win for the 16, with five shades available versus just three on the 17e. And while both phones now have MagSafe, the front glass tells a slightly different story — the 17e gets the newer Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple claims is significantly more scratch-resistant than the standard Ceramic Shield on the 16.

Brightness is where the 16 wins, and it’s not particularly close — 2,000 nits outside versus no outdoor rating at all on the 17e. A friend of mine had the 16e last year and was shielding his screen with his hand every time he stepped outside, which isn’t a good sign.
The HDR difference — 1,600 nits on the 16, 1,200 on the 17e — is one of those things that doesn’t register until you’re actually watching something. Fire up a movie with a lot of night scenes and the 16 handles the contrast noticeably better. The 17e muddies it a bit.
Apple had a real chance to ditch the notch on the 17e this year, but to everyone’s disappointment, it is still there. The iPhone 16 has Dynamic Island, which at least pretends to be useful — your Uber, your timer, whatever song is playing. The notch on the 17e does nothing except remind you that this design is nearly a decade old.
Neither phone has 120Hz, though, which stings regardless of which one you pick.

The chip story is straightforward — A19 in the 17e, A18 in the 16. One generation apart, and for most people buying either of these phones, completely unnoticeable in day-to-day use. Scrolling, messaging, and Instagram — both handle it without breaking a sweat.
Where the gap shows up is in gaming and anything AI-related, since the A19’s GPU cores have Neural Accelerators built in that the A18 doesn’t have in the same way.
ƒThe GPU core count is a bit of an odd one, though. The 17e gets 4 cores, the 16 gets 5. Newer phone, fewer GPU cores. That’s just how Apple does it with the e-series.
Modems are worth a mention. The 17e runs Apple’s in-house C1X, the 16 uses Qualcomm. The Qualcomm chip supports mmWave 5G; the C1X doesn’t. Wi-Fi 7 on the 16 is nice, but only if your home router was bought in the last year or two.
Same story with the second-gen UWB chip on the 16 — it makes AirTag tracking more precise, which sounds minor until you’re tearing your flat apart looking for your keys at 8 AM.
The storage gap is the one that’ll actually hit your wallet. ₹69,900 gets you 128GB on the iPhone 16. ₹64,900 — five thousand rupees less — gets you 256GB on the 17e.

On the surface, this section looks like a draw — both phones run iOS 26, both support Apple Intelligence, both get the Liquid Glass redesign that Apple shipped last year. Open either phone right now, and the software experience is going to feel identical for the most part.
The Liquid Glass redesign is the most visible change, giving the entire interface a translucent, almost frosted look. Beyond aesthetics, there’s Call Screening, which filters unknown callers before you even pick up, Hold Assist for those painful customer service calls, live message translation, an overhauled Games app, and a PDF Preview app that should’ve existed on iPhone years ago.
Longevity is where the 17e quietly pulls ahead. The iPhone 16 launched on iOS 18 — the 17e starts life on iOS 26. That gap means the 17e will almost certainly get software updates for a year longer, which matters quite a bit if you’re the kind of person who holds onto a phone until it stops getting updates entirely. In India, that’s most of us.
Apple Intelligence is another one to think about. Yes, both phones have it. But as Apple keeps adding more AI features with every iOS update, the A19 is going to handle that load better than the A18 — not dramatically, but noticeably a few years down the line when the features get heavier.

The camera section is where the iPhone 16 pulls furthest ahead, and the gap is hard to ignore.
Start with the obvious — the 16 has two cameras, the 17e has one. That missing ultrawide lens means no 0.5x pull-back, no macro shots, no Spatial Video, and no Cinematic mode. If you’ve ever tried squeezing a large group into one frame and ended up cutting half of them out, you already understand what that second lens is worth.
Zoom range tells the same story. The 16 goes from 0.5x to 2x. The 17e starts at 1x and stays there.
The main sensors are close on paper — both 48MP, both f/1.6 — but the 16 uses sensor-shift OIS versus standard OIS on the 17e. In good light, you won’t notice. At a dimly lit dinner or a concert, the 16 holds its edge.
Front cameras are identical on both — 12MP, f/1.9, same TrueDepth system. No difference there whatsoever. If you shoot a lot — travel, food, family events — the 16 is the better tool. The 17e’s single camera handles daily use just fine, but it does have a ceiling.

Battery is one of the few areas where the 17e beats the iPhone 16 without any asterisks attached.
The battery gap is real — 4,005 mAh on the 17e, 3,561 mAh on the 16. The jump from 22 to 26 hours of video playback is the kind of thing that doesn’t register until you’re at a wedding in Jaipur with no charger and three hours still left in the evening.
Plug both in and the experience is the same — 20W, about 30 minutes to hit 50%. Nothing to write home about if you’re used to a OnePlus or Samsung, but consistent between both phones. Wireless charging is 15W MagSafe and Qi2 on both, so nothing separates them there either.
The 17e wins this section, costs ₹5,000 less, and has the bigger battery. If you’re a heavy user — long days, lots of screen time, no desk to plug into — it’s the stronger pick here.

If you’re buying a phone to keep for four or five years, the 17e makes more sense. Better chip, more storage, bigger battery, and a software support window that starts a full year later than the 16. At ₹5,000 less. That combination is difficult to argue against, especially if you’re okay with the obvious compromises.

If cameras are your thing — travel, reels, food photography — the iPhone 16 is the one. The ultrawide alone justifies the price difference for anyone who shoots regularly, and Cinematic mode is something you’ll actually use once you have it.
For someone who’s had an iPhone before, knows what they’re missing without an ultrawide, and shoots a lot — the 16 is still worth the extra money while stocks last. I’ve used the iPhone 16 for over a year, and I’ll pick it over the iPhone 17e any day.
Last year, the handset’s 128GB variant was up for grabs at a heavily discounted price of Rs. 51,999 during the Flipkart Big Billion Days sale, making it almost impossible to argue against.
