It’s not uncommon to hear rumors about iPhones that are supposed to be released two or three years later. Today, we have a similar piece of information that suggests the delay of two game-changing techs that could be pivotal in the history of iPhones: foldable screens and under-display Face ID sensors. iPhone 17 Could Feature A Foldable Model
According to a new report by The Elec, iPhones won’t get a foldable display or an under-display Face ID sensor anytime soon. The company will take longer to include a foldable iPhone in its annual releases, perhaps in the iPhone 17 series. However, Apple could take another two to three years to equip an iPhone with an under-display Face ID sensor when the iPhone 18 Pro will be ready to hit the market.
The report cites a senior market researcher, Omdia Kang Min-soo, who states that Apple will launch a seven—to eight-inch foldable iPhone in 2026. Given that the primary screen size is similar to that of an iPad mini, Apple could either synergize both devices or differentiate them by powering the iPad with a more capable chipset than the iPhone. It is important to mention that most rival brands, like Samsung, Google, OnePlus, Vivo, Oppo, Xiaomi, and more, have already stepped into the foldable industry. Hence, Apple’s delayed entry might give them a window to make amends and capture more of the market than they already have.
iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Could Feature Under-Display Face ID Sensors
“Next ear, the iPhone SE4 with low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) TFT OLED will come out, and if the iPhone 17 series applies LTPO TFT in all four models in the second half of next year, Apple should also have to differentiate the iPhone lineup,” Min-soo says. The differentiation, however, could come from the under-display Face ID sensor. Previously, renowned analyst Ross Young also said that Apple plans to hide the Face ID sensors under the display, and per his estimates, the iPhone 17 Pro could be the first smartphone with such technology.
Apple is known to take its sweet time in adopting newer technology. For instance, the always-on display arrived on the iPhones with the iPhone 14 Pro series in 2022. Hence, there’s a good chance that the Cupertino-based giant would like to delay the under-display Face ID tech and foldable displays until it thinks it has achieved the quality it desires.
