TL;DR

  • As seen in the new teasers, the Kia Syros has a boxy profile (both from the front/rear and the side).
  • especially when compared to Kia’s other popular vehicles, which follow a similar design language. Even from the side, the flared fenders and wrap-around glass housing (toward the rear) are nothing we’ve seen on models like Sonet or Seltos.
  • Not much is known about the Syros’ powertrain. However, we believe that the vehicle will run on Kia’s tried-and-tested 1.2-liter naturally-aspirated petrol engine

After cracking the Indian automobile market with its Seltos and Sonet, Hyundai’s sister brand, Kia, is gearing up to launch another sub-4 meter SUV in the country. Unlike the Sonet, this one will come with a boxy design that’s prominent all around the exterior. On the inside, the vehicle could borrow some elements from the existing Kia models, but it is said to provide more space than the Sonet. The launch date of the vehicle isn’t yet out, but the company has teased it multiple times, suggesting an impending launch.

Kia Syros Release Date Confirmed

Update (November 29, 2024): The Korean automaker Kia has confirmed the launch date for the Syros compact SUV. The Syros will break cover in India (and globally) on December 19, 2024. As mentioned, the model will be positioned between the Sonet and the Seltos, improving the rear seat issues on the former and offering the latter’s comfort at a more affordable price point.

Kia’s fourth model for the country will inherit all the powertrain options from the Sonet. This includes a 1.2-liter NA petrol engine, a 1-liter turbo petrol engine, and a 1.5-liter diesel engine.

Kia Syros Teaser Confirms Panoramic Sunroof

As seen in the new teasers, the Kia Syros has a boxy profile (both from the front/rear and the side). On the front, the vehicle has vertically-aligned headlamps with three projector elements. Hidden in the headlamps are the daytime running LEDs, which are also placed vertically toward the outer edge. Between the DRLs is the chunky bumper, which contains broad air vents and what looks like a bottom skid plate.

Based on the current teasers, it is safe to say that the Kia Syros will have a distinct look and feel, especially when compared to Kia’s other popular vehicles, which follow a similar design language. Even from the side, the flared fenders and wrap-around glass housing (toward the rear) are nothing we’ve seen on models like Sonet or Seltos. On the rear, the vehicle has L-shaped LED lights and a split tail lamp set-up.

Although the Syros is said to be placed between the Sonet and the Seltos (in terms of pricing), the boxy design shown in the teasers raises more questions than it answers. Will the vehicle look good, especially since it won’t be lengthier than 4m? Will the additional height (compared to a regular compact SUV or coupe) add to the additional body role? Time will tell.

Kia Syros Powertrain

Not much is known about the Syros’ powertrain. However, we believe that the vehicle will run on Kia’s tried-and-tested 1.2-liter naturally-aspirated petrol engine. For those catching up, the engine produces 82 hp of peak power and 115 Nm of peak torque, which currently does duty on the Sonet. The engine could be mated to a five-speed manual and AMT units. If the company decides to include a turbo-petrol engine with some trims, it could combine it with an iVT (clutchless manual transmission) as well.

There could also be a diesel variant, but given the government’s stand against the fuel, it is unlikely that Kia will launch a diesel-powered variant, at least at launch. We are confident about the Syros’ EV variant, though, which could follow in a while.

Kia Syros Price And Availability

Kia Syros will be a part of the company’s 2.0 strategy for India, but its launch date isn’t confirmed yet. Even so, the vehicle is said to come out in 2025. In fact, there are rumors that Kia will showcase the vehicle at the Bharat Mobility Show in January 2025.

Regarding price, the vehicle could start at a price that’s higher than the Sonet but lower than the Seltos. We are talking about the Rs. 9 to 10 lakh price bracket. However, readers should know that this is just speculation, and nothing is confirmed at the moment.
