Meta has unveiled a volley of updates for popular messaging app WhatsApp. The new update can be called a complete revamp as the platform has a new interface, new colors, new icons, and a better dark mode. The changes have been brought to give a fresh new look to the messaging app. It is the first major overhaul that WhatsApp has had since 2021.

Meta has kept three principles in mind- Freshness, Approachability, and Simplicity.

Let us have a look at how WhatsApp has been revamped.

New Icons & Illustrations

WhatsApp icons have been changed with a rounded, outlined style to give them a new look. Illustrations have also been refreshed and have animation added for playfulness.

The backgrounds of the chat window have received a makeover as well. These now have a simple design representing diversity.

Fresh Colors

The messaging app has got a new green palette for a consistent visual experience. Meta considered over 35 shades after which the company settled on green which they claim complements WhatsApp’s iconic green offering harmonious color combinations. Neutral colors have been added for more flexibility and a darker mode has also been introduced that is better with deeper tones to reduce eye strain in low-light environments. The dark mode is no longer greenish-grey and more AMOLED-friendly.

Better Chat Management

After recently rolling out chat filters, WhatsApp has tried to build upon making important conversations more accessible. The navigation bar is located at the bottom of Android devices while chat filters are placed at the top of the chat list. Users can easily switch between unread and group filters as well to catch up on messages or find their favorite group chats.

A modern navigation bar has been placed at the bottom that allows quicker access to features. Tabs can be found closer to the user’s thumb which makes navigation more intuitive for Android users. For iOS users, a new attachment layout has been introduced making it easier to send media, polls, documents, and more. The new UI shows story updates at the top of the main screen. It shows a glimpse of what someone’s status is.

Design for Future

Meta claims that there is a collaborative effort behind these updates, and a multidisciplinary team of designers is behind these changes. Meta is committed to offering better connectivity through WhatsApp, whether it is persona, or business interactions so these new features aim to empower the user experience around the world.

The Meta-owned platform WhatsApp has announced that the update is slowly rolling to all devices and might not be available to everyone yet. The updates will be available to everyone in the coming days.

Idnit Yaniv, VP & Head of WhatsApp Design at Meta said, “Our design philosophy aligns with our product principles of maintaining WhatsApp’s simplicity, reliability, and privacy. We filter these principles through a design lens to create intuitive and clear flows that universally facilitate connections while safeguarding privacy. We closely observe how people interact with their devices, ensuring our user interface complements their existing experiences, thereby making WhatsApp feel familiar and effortless to navigate. If you’re familiar with using your device, using WhatsApp should be easy.”
