Prominent automobile manufacturer MG has released images providing a first glimpse of the forthcoming MG ZS Electric SUV. The existing MG ZS EV currently on the market will be succeeded by this new electric SUV, which is anticipated to launch in the UK next year. In China, the vehicle will be known as the MG ES5, and it will face competition from models such as the Kia EV3, Skoda Elroq, and Hyundai Kona Electric. Reports indicate that this electric vehicle will not be branded as ‘ZS EV,’ but it will feature design elements reminiscent of MG’s existing electric lineup, particularly the MG4 hatchback. The pre-sale will start in China on November 2nd.

MG ES5: Design

The new MG ES5 SUV showcases a more subdued design compared to the MG ZS EV. The ZS EV is characterized by its streamlined headlamps, black plastic side cladding, and a prominent chrome MG octagon emblem, complemented by a full-width light bar and Y-shaped tail lights, along with roof rails visible in the images. Inside, a central touchscreen serves as the centerpiece of the minimalist interior layout. It is possible that the cabin design for the UK version will differ and exhibit some resemblances to the latest MG models.

MG ES5: Size & Platform

In comparison to the current model, the ZS replacement will feature a design that is lower, wider, and longer. The new electric vehicle will surpass the Hyundai Kona Electric in length, measuring 4476 mm, which is approximately 120 mm longer. Additionally, the wheelbase will extend to 2730 mm, providing increased interior space. This SUV has been developed on MG’s Modular Scalable Platform, which accommodates a range of battery and motor configurations.

MG ES5: Range

The MG ES5 is expected to offer powertrain options akin to those found in the MG4. This electric vehicle will come with a rear-wheel drive, and its electric motor will produce between 168 and 242 horsepower. The entry-level variant is likely to be equipped with a 51kWh battery, providing a range exceeding 321 kilometers. Additionally, the larger 77kWh battery is anticipated to achieve a range of over 480 kilometers on a single charge. The chassis is designed to accommodate dual motor setups, suggesting that an all-wheel-drive version could be developed in the future.

MG ES5: Pricing & Launch

MG is set to introduce the ES5 in the UK at a competitive price of £30,000, which is considerably lower than many other automotive brands. This pricing strategy could enhance MG’s market presence. When comparing competitors, the Skoda Elroq, Kia EV3, and Hyundai Kona 3 are all priced slightly higher than the MG ES5.

In response to the growing demand for the ZS EV, MG is also planning to launch new energy vehicles in the future. There is a strong possibility that the updated ZS EV will be available in India, given its popularity in that market. Additionally, MG is expected to offer internal combustion engine (ICE) and hybrid versions of this electric vehicle. While initial sales may be modest, the brand has the potential to strengthen its market position over time.

Moreover, MG is actively developing electric vehicles to rival the Enyaq and Renault Scenic.
