MG Motor is planning to step into the affordable category of EVs in India. The company has hinted towards launching an electric car in the price range of Rs 10 to 15 Lakh by the end of 2022-2023 financial year. The London based company is also opting for India for mass production of its upcoming cars and EVs.

As of now, MG Motor has the only electric car on Indian roads and it is the MG ZS EV electric SUV. To succeed the existing EV, the manufacturer is gearing up to bring an electric crossover based on a global platform. While the MG could customise the next EV for the Indian market.

MG Motor India President and MD Rajeev Chaba told PTI, “Our next product after SUV Astor, we have been thinking about an EV and now we have been very encouraged with the absolute clarity from the government side that EV is the way to go.”

The company is currently selling the MG ZS EV in India between an ex-showroom price of Rs 21 lakh and Rs 24.68 lakh. The executive stated that there are more than 2000 orders on the company’s list but the manufacturer is able to deliver only 250 to 300 units in a month. The reason that Chaba provided is the ongoing chip crisis around the world.

But the MG India head assured to produce up to 600 ZS EV cars per month by January-February of 2022. The carmaker is working to meet the Indian government guidelines for the auto sector which required an automobile brand to comply with the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme pushing them to produce parts of the car locally within the country.
