In a significant development in the technology sector, Muralikrishnan B has resigned from his position as President of Xiaomi India. He joined the company in 2018 and took on the role of President in 2022. During his time in this position, he played a crucial role in the expansion of Xiaomi’s operations in India, even navigating challenges such as a period of intense scrutiny from government authorities regarding illegal remittances a few years back. Xiaomi India has not yet announced a successor for the presidential role.

Muralikrishnan B. Resigns

Reports indicate that Muralikrishnan B’s departure from Xiaomi India was motivated by personal factors. A Moneycontrol article suggests that he plans to pursue a doctorate at the Indian School of Business and will be on a six-month gardening leave following his exit from the company.

Throughout his tenure, he successfully guided the expansion of Xiaomi India’s offline retail channels in collaboration with Dixon Technologies to manufacture smartphones in 2023. Additionally, he navigated challenging circumstances in 2022 when the company faced criticism regarding illegal royalty payments. In June 2023, Xiaomi also received a significant show-cause notice from the Enforcement Directorate for purported violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act.

Reflecting on his time at Xiaomi India, Murali shares,

Thank you … and to new beginnings

After over six wonderful years with Xiaomi India, I will be stepping down from my role as the President of Xiaomi India at the end of this year. My journey with Xiaomi has been an incredibly fulfilling learning experience, and I look forward to creating more value and impact by dedicating my time to academics and research.

I will pursue my research interests in consumer behavior on technology platforms as part of the Executive Doctorate program at the Indian School of Business (ISB) and help drive synergies between the world of the practitioner of business and that of the academician. Additionally, I will continue to support the company as an Independent Strategic Advisor.

Reflecting on my journey with Xiaomi, I feel immense gratitude. We have created something truly special—a brand that connects with hundreds of millions of people across India, supported by a team that embodies Xiaomi’s values of passion, innovation, and sincerity. Throughout this journey, our team’s dedication, fans’ enthusiasm, and partners’ support have continually inspired me. Together, we’ve reached milestones that once seemed unattainable.

As I begin this next chapter, I feel encouraged knowing that a world-class leadership team guides Xiaomi India. I am confident that the leadership and the entire team will pursue our shared vision with the same commitment and excellence that define Xiaomi India. The organization’s vision of #10YearsofTomorrow will continue to inspire everyone, and I am excited to see how far and high it takes the business.

As I sign off, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to my family for being my strongest support pillars, to the leadership team at Xiaomi for their belief in me, and to my teammates for making this experience so special. So many individuals have contributed to making this journey unforgettable. You know who you are, and I sincerely thank you for the difference you have made in my life.

With immense gratitude,
Murali”

His career began at Asian Paints, after which he held positions at companies such as Sify Ltd., Tata Communications, eBay, Jabong, and Myntra.

Xiaomi India has yet to reveal the successor to Muralikrishnan B. However, there is considerable speculation that COO Sudhin Mathur, a former Managing Director at Lenovo, may step into this role and become the new representative for Xiaomi India. Sudhin Mathur is considered a strong candidate for the position of President at Xiaomi India, as he played a pivotal role in establishing Lenovo as a leading player in 2015. He collaborated with Anuj Sharma, who is now the Chief Marketing Officer at Xiaomi, to navigate Lenovo through a highly competitive market, which eventually led to Lenovo’s merger with Motorola Mobility to sustain its operations.

Xiaomi’s Alvin Tse is expected to continue in his role as India Head. Xiaomi India is expected to make a statement regarding the matter soon.
