Netflix slashes plan prices to woo the Indian Market

OTT Streaming giant Netflix has announced new and produced prices for plans in India. After the prices were revised, a Netflix subscription is now available for as low as Rs. 149 per month for a mobile plan. The new plans will apply to all customers. The move is most likely a part of Netflix’s attempts to attract more subscribers in the country given it remains the most expensive streaming service in the country. [हिंदी में पढ़ें]

Netflix India New Plan Charges

Under the new price scheme, the Netflix Basic Plan will now cost Rs. 199 per month as opposed to its earlier price of Rs. 499 per month. This is quite a price drop for sure though the resolution is limited to 480p. Under this plan, you can access Netflix on a computer or TV as well.

 The Standard Netflix Plan will now cost Rs. 499 per month instead of Rs. 649 earlier. This one comes with support for 2 devices at the same time and 1080p resolution. The account can be accessed on mobile, TV, Computers, and tablets.

The Netflix Mobile plan now starts at Rs. 149 per month and supports either mobile or tablet with 480p resolution. You cannot access Netflix on  TV or computer with the Mobile Plan. Also, the account can be accessed by one device at a time.

The most expensive Netflix plan, which is the Premium Plan will now cost Rs. 649 per month as opposed to Rs. 799 per month earlier. It comes with a 4K resolution and the ability to access Netflix from 4 devices at the same time. The content can be viewed on all 4 devices which are tablet, computer, mobile, and TV.

Will existing users auto-upgrade?

While Netflix has reduced prices, its rival Amazon Prime has increased the prices for its video services which now cost Rs. 1499 per year as compared to Rs. 999 earlier. Monika Shergill, VP-Content, Netflix India said that they are also rolling out a new auto-upgrade feature for existing members starting December 14. Under this, the service will show a popup that allows users to auto-upgrade their plan to the next tier if they are comfortable paying the existing prices.

For example, if the user is on the Old Basic Rs. 499 plan and they confirm the upgrade, they will automatically be moved to the next tier ‘Standard’ which now has the same Rs. 499 price. Alternatively, users can also decline the upgrade to avail themselves of the lower pricing.

“The new price plans are in line with our strategy to provide content that goes deeper into the country and aims to reach wider audiences,” Monika said.

This move would allow Netflix to attract a new set of audience to its platform at a time when it is increasingly relying on international markets for future growth.

Netflix’s experiments in India

In the past couple of years, Netflix has tried various schemes in India to attract viewership. A cheaper entry-level plan was tested earlier this year, giving free weekend access to non-subscribers in December 2020 and testing weekly plans and discounted long-term subscription plans last year. It also made select shows and movies available for free to all users across the world in August last year.

Netflix ramped up its content programming in India, releasing its largest ever roster of more than 40 original titles in March this year.

  • Malayalam language superhero comedy film Minnal Murali
  •  R Madhavan starrer romantic comedy Decoupled
  • Madhuri Dixit starrer Finding Anamika.
  • Loop Lapeta starring Taapsee Pannu and Tahir Raj Bhasin
