TL; DR
- A recent report by Android Authority gives us a closer look at what Samsung’s tri-folding smartphone could look like (including its design and the unique folding mechanism).
- First, the foldable has three rear panels. Imagine the Galaxy Z Fold 6, if you will, and then add another panel in the middle (with the ones on the sides attached via foldable hinges).
- It will feature a folding mechanism referred to as a G-shaped fold, while what we’ve seen on the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate is an S-shaped fold.
While a Samsung tri-folding smartphone has been in development for some time, recent rumors suggest that it may make a surprise appearance at the upcoming Galaxy Unpacked event on July 9, 2025. Although we didn’t know much about the phone’s design, a new report from a credible publication tells us more about the phone’s design (citing animation files in the One UI 8 build).

First Look At Samsung’s Tri-Folding Smartphone

A recent report by Android Authority gives us a closer look at what Samsung’s tri-folding smartphone could look like (including its design and the unique folding mechanism).
First, the foldable has three rear panels. Imagine the Galaxy Z Fold 6, if you will, and then add another panel in the middle (with the ones on the sides attached via foldable hinges).
- The leftmost panel houses the camera module, which features three rear-facing cameras (similar to those found on the Galaxy Z Fold 6).
- The one in the center seems to feature the cover screen, as it has a punch-hole cutout at the top (and is shown with a lighter color in the diagram). This implies that the central panel will be at the top when the device is folded.
- The one on the right doesn’t have a screen.

Samsung’s Galaxy G Fold To Feature A Unique Folding Mechanism

- The design suggests that you’d have to flip the phone to switch between the screens; let me explain. When using the cover screen, the two folding panels would be below it.
- If you go ahead and unfold the phone in the same orientation (with the cover screen facing upward), the inner screen will face away from you; i.e., you’ll have to flip the phone to use the bigger display.
In other words, when you’re using the handset in its unfolded state, the cover screen will face away from you. While some readers might have already guessed, the folding mechanics suggest that the upcoming tri-folding phone will feature a unique folding mechanism.
- When using the cover screen, you’d first have to unfold the panel with the rear cameras, followed by the right panel.
- You could also start with the panel with the cameras facing toward you, in which case, you’d unfold it to the right, the second panel to the left, and then access the inner screen.

This type of folding mechanism is referred to as a G-shaped fold, while what we’ve seen on the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate is an S-shaped fold.

Given that the panel with the rear-facing camera will lie over another panel, it will have a larger hinge to accommodate the other panel. An animation shared by the publication also suggests that the phone will show a warning in case users fold the right panel inward before the left one (when facing the inner screen).
