TL; DR
  • Nothing OS 4.0 will bring a more minimal interface, a new lock screen clock, and an Extra Dark Mode feature.
  • It will also add dual Pop-up View, and an AI Usage Dashboard.
  • The update will debut on the Nothing Phone 3, later expanding to Phone (2), Phone (2a), Phone (2a) Plus, Phone (3a), Phone (3a) Pro, CMF Phone 1, and CMF Phone 2 Pro.

Nothing has once again teased OS 4.0, its next major software update. The update will introduce an even more minimal interface, a new lock screen clock option, and an Extra Dark Mode that will deepen blacks for better comfort.

Multitasking will see a significant upgrade with the option to run two apps in floating Pop-up View windows at the same time. A quick swipe will minimize a window, while pulling down will expand it to full screen. This gesture has existed on their UIs for a long time now and it’s good to see Nothing OS also follow.

Nothing OS 4.0 will also add an AI Usage Dashboard, giving users clear visibility of how large language models run in the background. Daily and weekly stats, along with model-specific details, will offer more transparency over on-device AI.

Other refinements will include tweaks to the Recorder app, About page, and a new Whisper function in Essential Space. We are also expecting some updates to the system apps but we’re not sure about that for now at least.

The official unveiling of Nothing OS 4.0 will take place later (likely alongside the Ear (3) launch on September 18), with the open beta program set to launch later this month. The update will first arrive on the Nothing Phone (3), followed by a wider rollout to Phone (2), Phone (2a), Phone (2a) Plus, Phone (3a), Phone (3a) Pro, CMF Phone 1, and CMF Phone 2 Pro.
