TL; DR
  • The OnePlus 15 telephoto camera has been confirmed as the Samsung JN5, the same sensor used in the OPPO Reno14 Pro.
  • The EXIF data from OnePlus’ own samples revealed 85 mm f2.8 shots (80 mm optical focal length) with an actual focal length of 12.2 mm.
  • This marks a downgrade from the OnePlus 13, which had a larger 1/1.95-inch telephoto sensor compared to the smaller 1/2.76-inch sensor on the OnePlus 15.

OnePlus has quietly dropped fresh camera samples from its upcoming flagship, the OnePlus 15, showcasing its new imaging engine. The images reveal shots captured at 85 mm focal length with f2.8 aperture. When I downloaded the images, I was surprised to find the EXIF data attached.

So, I checked the EXIF data and found the actual focal length, which matches exactly with the OPPO Reno14 Pro’s telephoto at 12.2 mm. Both the OnePlus 15 and Reno14 Pro telephotos have a crop factor of 6.9X. This confirms they use the same sensor, meaning the OnePlus 15’s telephoto is indeed the Samsung JN5.

I also realized that both phones digitally crop from 80 mm to 85 mm. This makes the actual crop factor 6.6X for the telephoto sensor on both devices, which matches exactly with the JN5. Oh, and the model number of the OnePlus 15 is PLK110, at least in China.

Interestingly, the new imaging branding splits by market. In China, the system is still called LUMO Imaging, while in India it has been rebranded as the DetailMax Engine. This transition follows the end of OnePlus’ long-standing partnership with Hasselblad.

OnePlus DetailsMax

The company says DetailMax is built from the imaging expertise developed during that collaboration but tuned under its own algorithms going forward.

Looking closer, the OnePlus 15’s telephoto hardware is a step down compared to the OnePlus 13. The new setup uses a smaller 1/2.76-inch sensor at f2.8, while the OnePlus 13 carried a larger 1/1.95-inch sensor at f2.6, which allowed more light in. On paper, that means weaker low-light performance.

That said, early samples do look promising, with decent sharpness and blur. But as always, the real test will be how the camera holds up in everyday conditions when the OnePlus 15 officially launches later this year.
