The makers of Android smartphones have been looking for an alternative to Apple’s MagSafe charging technology introduced last year. Recently, Chinese smartphone maker Realme showcased its MagDart technology, which operates in a similar way, and now Oppo has introduced its Oppo MagVOOC technology. During this week’s Smart China Expo 2021 in Chongqing in China, the company showcased its new magnetic fast charging technology. The new charging technology enables fast charging, in-car connectivity, and more, and will be built into various devices and accessories. It is a truly wireless charging system that can send power to a phone that is several inches away.

The magnetic system is called MagVOOC. There are two 40W and two 20W chargers in the first generation of products, as well as a power bank, so the accessories are different than those from Realme.

It holds the phone magnetically and can deliver 40W to compatible devices, such as the Oppo Ace2, whose 4,000 mAh battery can be fully charged in 56 minutes. Older models, such as the Find X3, can be charged at 30W. Additionally, the charger supports Qi and can deliver up to 15W to devices without MagVOOC.

A 20W MagVOOC charger is available as well. Although it is not as powerful, it is much more portable. Additionally, it supports Qi charging at up to 10W.

MagVOOC’s power bank has a 4,500 mAh internal capacity, and it can charge compatible phones at 20W. Additionally, the bank supports the Qi standard, so you can top up accessories like smartwatches and TWS headsets. You can also get 10W from the USB-C port if you have a cable handy. The battery itself needs 2 hours to charge up completely using a cable.

Finally, something for the future – Oppo Air Charging can transfer up to 7.5W of power to a phone at a small distance and at various angles (i.e. the phone does not have to be perfectly illuminated). If the charger is built into your desk, you can charge your phone while playing a game without having to worry about cables.

There is no information on when MagVOOC products will be available to consumers or what devices will be supported. Pricing is another thing that will have to wait for a more detailed reveal from Oppo. Oppo has multiple patents and a functioning prototype, though currently there doesn’t seem to be any plans to bring these to retail.
