TL; DR
  • OPPO has revealed a true 10X optical zoom (230 mm) system using an industry-first 5-reflection periscope design.
  • The setup uses a custom 50 MP JNL fusion sensor with next-gen zoom tech, enabling 20X optical-quality output (460 mm) and up to 120X digital zoom.
  • The Find X9 Ultra is set to launch in China on April 28, with global rollout including India expected later.

OPPO has officially started sharing key specifications of the Find X9 Ultra, with the first major highlight being its 10X true optical zoom system. The company has also released a comparison image, confirming the scale of the hardware involved.

This setup delivers a 230 mm equivalent focal length at 10X optical zoom, with a 460 mm equivalent output at 20X using what OPPO describes as optical-quality processing.

New 5-Reflection Periscope System

The biggest change comes from the internal lens structure. Previous periscope systems typically used an L-shape or multi-prism setup with fewer reflections. OPPO is now using a 5-reflection folded optical system, which changes how light travels inside the module.

Light now bounces five times before reaching the sensor, which is the first time this approach has been implemented in a smartphone telephoto system.

To manage this, OPPO is using a nano-cut prism structure with an air-gap design, which isolates light paths and reduces flare and internal reflections. The goal is to maintain clarity despite the increased number of reflections.

Optical Calibration and Sensor Integration

The system also includes triple AOA active calibration, which aligns the lens and sensor across three axes during manufacturing. This ensures consistency in focus and optical precision across units.

At the sensor level, OPPO is using a custom 50 MP JNL fusion sensor, specifically designed for this telephoto system. It uses updated microlens and color filter structures and is based on newer zoom technologies similar to recent high-end sensors.

This combination is designed to improve detail retention, dynamic range, and color accuracy, especially at longer focal lengths.

Aperture and Light Intake

The telephoto camera is expected to use an f/3.5 aperture, paired with a larger sensor than earlier long-range zoom systems.

For context, older implementations like the Galaxy S23 Ultra used a much smaller 1/3.52-inch sensor with an f/4.9 aperture at 10X. The newer OPPO setup combines a larger sensor and faster aperture, which significantly increases light intake, by up to 3 times.

Zoom Range

The system is designed to deliver:

  • True 10X optical zoom (230 mm)
  • 20X optical-quality zoom (460 mm)
  • Up to 120X digital zoom

Other Camera Hardware

Alongside the new 10X system, the Find X9 Ultra is expected to include a dual 200 MP camera setup, with OPPO already confirming a 1/1.12-inch main sensor.

A 3X periscope camera is also expected to be part of the system, along with an upgraded ultra-wide camera using the Sony LYT-600 sensor.

Launch Timeline

OPPO Find X9 Ultra

The OPPO Find X9 Ultra is scheduled to launch in China on April 20. The device is expected to reach Southeast Asian markets on the same date, followed by a wider rollout in Europe and India. More specifications are expected to be revealed closer to launch as OPPO continues its teaser campaign.
