The ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 has already showcased the latest in the tech world including Lenovo’s transparent laptop concept. Cut to now, Chinese smartphone maker Oppo has revealed the next venture in the smart glasses sector with Oppo Air Glass 3 which has AndresGPT integration to execute voice commands and interaction with the device.

Weighing at 50g, Oppo Air Glass 3 is the apt successor to Air Glass 2. It uses AndesGPT generative AI that opens up the floodgates of features using the next-gen technology. The prototype runs on ColorOS 13 and later and is compatible with Oppo smartphones. It means in case Oppo decides to launch Air Glass 3 to the public, it will likely be released as an exclusive with Oppo smartphones.

These glasses use Oppo’s AndesGPT LLM that powers its voice assistant. Although it might require users to connect to their phones (wired or otherwise), these lightweight smart glasses can execute voice commands, however, it seems like GPT will be available only in China in case it rolls out.

Moving on, the smart glasses ensure a high degree of interaction on their vibrant full-color display that lights up at 1000 nits of brightness. The refractive index on these high-quality resin waveguide glasses is 1.70 enabling a clear view while the optimum high brightness allows you to use these glasses irrespective of the lighting conditions. The four strategically placed microphone setups ensure clearer audio without picking up much background noise.

You can use the touch sensors on Oppo’s Air Glass 3 to make calls, interact with photos, check whether, get information from the internet, control music, and much more. It is an ongoing application of mixed reality which is a budding tech almost every major company is looking after including TCL and Meta. Apple recently unveiled its mixed reality headset – Apple Vision Pro, which has taken the world by storm. However, it remains a question if Vision Pro is a futuristic tech or just a gimmick. We picked up that story that you can read here and decide for yourself. Apple was reportedly working on its pair of smart glasses at some point in time although the project won’t fly as per the sources.

Coming back to Oppo, these Air Glass 3 look exactly like spectacles that make it much more comforting to use in public without standing down amidst the crowd. Moreover, Oppo claims it has developed a new resin waveguide that can reduce the ‘rainbow effect’ – a phenomenon when the light refracts when passing through a medium (i.e. the display).

Oppo is fine-tuning various aspects of its prototype. For instance, it has managed to bring down the weight of its Air Glass 3 to 50g. Albeit it is still heavy when you consider lightweight spectacles, we are sure the Chinese giant will work its way through cutting the fluff. The smart glass uses touch sensors that let you control many functions aforementioned.
