Last October, Reliance Jio had started levying 6 paise per minute for voice calls made to its competitor networks. The company had faced a lot of heat for this decision since, at the time of its inception, the promise was of lifetime free calls to its users. Well, starting tomorrow, Jio is honoring that commitment again.

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is rolling out its ‘Bill and Keep‘ regime from January 1. This means an end to interconnect usage charges (IUC), or in other words, no more ‘6 paise per minute’ charge while making domestic calls between connections from different operators.

In a media release, Jio has announced, “IUC regime for domestic voice calls comes to an end. All calls from Jio to any network, anywhere will be free”. It further adds, “Jio is committed to lay the foundation of a Digital Society – a society where everything, everyone, everywhere is connected with the best quality service, at the lowest price globally, and has access to the most advanced digital platforms. Through technological innovation, Jio will continue to deliver revolutionary products and services to its users, with a Customer-First approach”.

Finally, as the company highlights, “On-net domestic voice calls have always been free on the Jio network”. That is free Jio-to-Jio voice calls using the VoIP technology.

The new announcement should come as a Happy New Year gift to all Jio subscribers. What do you say?
