Jio is back again to disrupt the prevailing market and this time it enters the broadband bazaar with its Jio GigaFiber service. This would be a broadband-landline-TV combo, which in itself feels a good deal. The exciting part is the price of Rs. 600 ($8.6) in India.

Announced back in July 2018, this new venture by Reliance was in testing phase across several major Indian cities such as Delhi and Mumbai. Now that it is inching towards the public rollout, let’s delve into the features and details.

Why broadband connection and why to go for Reliance Jio GigaFiber? – a doubt that would loom in all of our minds. Well, GigaFiber could peak up to a speed of 1GBps. With such a speed, you could consume UHD media, multi-party video conferencing, AR VR gaming and much more.

Interestingly, the service would be free for the first year of the commercial rollout. Just the broadband connection would cost you around Rs. 600 per month in India. The new service could come with a smart home feature that connects at least 40 devices for a ₹1,000 ($14.33) bill per month.

To avail the service, you have to pay a one-time deposit of ₹4,500 for the proprietary router- ONT (Optical Network Terminal) box. Thereafter, use 100 GB of data at a speed of 100 MBps for free. Coming to rest of the combo components, the landline services will come with the unlimited calling facility, while television services will be delivered through IPTV.

On the downside, you could face the following problems, albeit in the initial phase:

  • You may face blocked access to Reddit, porn, Telegram, SoundCloud, and even proxy websites.
  • Jio GigaFiber is accused of deep packet inspection, Carrier Grade NAT, poor IPv6 practices, and a locked-down router.
  • Finally, during its broad public release, the customer care services could take some hit.

Jio’s Broadband market share is already past 50 percent, and with the new combo packs, the venture will now take on DTH market.
