Samsung AR Smart Glasses: Timeline

A report from South Korea reveals important information regarding Samsung’s inaugural augmented reality glasses. The company is expected to begin selling the glasses in the third quarter of 2025, with initial production being restricted, indicating that the launch will occur in select markets initially.

Samsung first hinted at these glasses in 2023 during the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Series. Additionally, it was announced that the glasses are being developed in collaboration with Qualcomm, which will supply the chipset, and Google, which will provide the large language models to enable AI functionalities.

Qualcomm’s CEO, Cristino Amon, announced that the company is developing a mixed-reality smart glass product in collaboration with Samsung. Although Samsung has not provided extensive details about the device, it has indicated that its inaugural product in this category is expected to launch in 2025. This aligns with recent leaks suggesting a release in the third quarter of 2025 for the smart glasses. Initially, the production will be limited to 500,000 units, allowing the brand to gauge market response before considering larger-scale manufacturing or potentially restricting availability to specific markets.

The Samsung AR Smart Glasses are anticipated to utilize Qualcomm’s AR1 semiconductor as the primary processing unit, complemented by an auxiliary NXP semiconductor. They will feature a 12MP Sony IMX681 CMOS image sensor for the camera. These glasses are expected to facilitate mobile payments through QR codes, along with gesture recognition and various AI functionalities.

Powering the device may be a 155mAh battery, and the overall weight is projected to be around 50 grams. Additionally, Google’s Gemini LLM will be integrated to enhance the AI capabilities of the device. Designed for comfort in daily use, the Samsung AR Smart Glasses will seamlessly blend into everyday life.

A launch in the third quarter of 2025 suggests that a formal announcement may coincide with the second Unpacked event, during which Samsung typically reveals its latest foldable devices. It remains uncertain whether Samsung will provide a first glimpse of the glasses at CES 2025 or during the Unpacked event for the Galaxy S25 Series.
