Samsung Electronics has announced the Exynos 990 chipset and Exynos 5123 5G modem at the Samsung Tech Day 2019. These new chips are formed using 7nm EUV technology. The Exynos 990 comes with supports for 120Hz display, 108MP camera, LPDDR5 RAM and 5G. This is likely a successor to the Exynos 9825 SoC and might ship within the Galaxy S20 in early 2020.

Starting off with the architecture, it has two powerful custom cores, two high-performance Cortex-A76 cores, and four power-efficient Cortex-A55 cores. The new tri-cluster structure claims to bring an overall 13-percent performance boost. It features real-time on-device AI on account of the dual-core neural processing unit (NPU) and snappy digital signal processor (DSP) that can perform over ten-trillion operations (TOPs) per second.

On the graphics front, it sports Mali-G77 MP11 GPU that’s based on ARM’s Valhall architecture. Again, this promises around 20% better performance and power efficiency than the Mali-G76 MP12 GPU. This is complemented by LPDDR5 with data rates of up to 5,500 megabits per second (MB/s) for wider memory bandwidth.

Moving on, it supports an advanced image signal processor (ISP) employing up to six individual image sensors with concurrent processing of three shooting resolutions up to 108MP sensor. It also brings a 120Hz refresh-rate display driver on board. Last, but definitely not the least, it leverages 5G prowess thanks to the newly launched Exynos 5123 modem that covers a range of networks including sub-6GHz and mmWave spectrums going all the way up to 2G GSM/CDMA.

Samsung expects the mass production of both Exynos 990 and Exynos Modem 5123 to begin by the end of this year. If you recall, Samsung had unveiled the Exynos 980 chipset earlier in September which is a mid-range chipset for integrated 5G modem.
