After months of rumors and speculations, the Korean tech giant Samsung has revealed the next-generation Fan Edition smartphone: the Galaxy S24 FE. As the name suggests, the handset belongs to the Galaxy S24 series released later this year. However, does it offer enough upgrades over last year’s Galaxy S23 FE? Let’s find out in this detailed comparison.

Galaxy S24 FE Vs. Galaxy S23 FE: Design

While there aren’t any significant changes in the handset’s design, the S24 FE is noticeably bigger than the S23 FE. The latest Fan Edition smartphone measures 162 x 77.3 x 8 mm, which is taller, wider, and ever so slightly thinner than its predecessor.

Even though the S24 FE is slimmer, it weighs four grams more than the S23 FE. While the former is available in Blue, Graphite, Gray, Mint, and Yellow, the latter was launched in Cream, Graphite, Mint, Purple, and two special edition colors including Indigo and Tangerine.

To protect the screen against scratches, the S24 FE now ships with Gorilla Glass Victus+ as opposed to Gorilla Glass 5 on the S23 FE. However, all the other materials, like the aluminum on the frame and the Gorilla Glass 5 back glass, remain the same. Both phones also share an IP68 dust and water resistance rating.

However, beyond the differences, both phones feature a punch-hole screen, symmetrical bezels on all sides (except a slightly thicker chin), and a triple-rear camera on the back with flushed sensors.

One of the most significant differences among the smartphones is their display. While the Galaxy S23 FE featured a 6.4-inch AMOLED screen with 1,450 nits of peak brightness, the S24 FE ships with a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen with 1,900 nits of peak brightness. Hence, you get a bigger and brighter screen on the new phone.

However, the screen on the new handset is a tad less sharp (385 pp vs. 403 ppi). Differences aside, both screens support adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz, are built on a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, and support HDR10+ content. While Samsung could have improved the optical sensor on the S24 FE, it decided to stick with the optical sensor (similar to that on the S23 FE).

Galaxy S24 FE Vs. Galaxy S23 FE: Performance

The Galaxy S24 FE runs on the Exynos 2400e (4nm) chipset, which is based on the flagship Exynos 2400 SoC used on the Galaxy S24 (review) and Galaxy S24 Plus (review). For those wondering, the new chipset has a max clock speed of 3.1GHz (via Android Authority), which makes it significantly more powerful than the Exynos 2200 SoC on the S23 FE (with a peak clock speed of 2.8GHz).

Alongside the capable processor, the S24 FE sports 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. The S23 FE also launched with 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. Both phones also have a vapor chamber to keep the CPU’s temperature in check during prolonged gaming sessions.

Besides the processor, RAM, and storage, both the phones support Galaxy AI features, including Circle to Search, Super HDR Photo Viewing in Gallery, Interpreter, Generative Wallpapers, Generative Editing in Gallery, transcription in the voice recorder app, summarization in Samsung Notes, and Live Translation in phone calls.

With Samsung’s four-year operating system promise, the Galaxy S23 FE will get updated to Android 17. Even after, the handset could get a year or two of security updates. However, with the S24 FE, users will get software updates till 2031, which gives it a significant advantage over the S23 FE. For now, both phones run on the One Ui 6.1.1 update.

Adding to the list of similarities between the two phones, the triple-camera setup on the S24 FE is identical to that on the S23 FE.

We’re talking about a 50MP (f/1.8, OIS) primary sensor, an 8MP (f/2.4) telephoto sensor for 3x optical zoom, and a 12MP (f/2.2) sensor. On the front, the phones feature a 10MP (f/2.4) selfie shooter. Even with similar sensors, the S24 FE has managed to pack in a few improvements.

For instance, the handset comes with Samsung’s ProVisual Engine for enhanced picture details. It also features all the Galaxy AI features, including Generative Edit, Portrait Studio, and Edit Suggestions. While the S24 FE supports Instant Slow-Mo, the S23 FE doesn’t.

Further, the new Fan Edition smartphone can shoot 8K videos at 30 fps, while last year’s version maxes out at 24 fps.

Galaxy S24 FE Vs. Galaxy S23 FE: Battery And Charging

The Galaxy S24 FE features a 4,700 mAh battery, which is larger than the 4,500 mAh battery on the S23 FE. While the former is rated to provide up to 28 hours of video playback, the latter tops at 22 hours. Given that the S24 FE has a bigger and brighter display, we’re a little skeptical about any significant improvements in the effective battery life.

Apart from the increase in the battery capacity, the charging speeds — 25W wired and 15W wireless — remain the same on both smartphones. Both phones are compatible with reverse wireless charging.

The Galaxy S24 FE supports 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth v5.3, NFC, and GPS, which is the same as the connectivity options on the S23 FE. Further, both the phones feature a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port.

Galaxy S24 FE Vs. Galaxy S23 FE: Price And Conclusion

Galaxy S24 FE Price

  • Galaxy S24 FE (128GB): Rs. 59,999
  • Galaxy S24 FE (256GB): Rs. 65,999

Galaxy S23 FE Price

  • Galaxy S23 FE (128GB): Rs. 54,999
  • Galaxy S23 FE (256GB): Rs. 57,999

While the Galaxy S23 FE is listed at the aforementioned price on Samsung’s website, the smartphone is available at Rs. 29,999 for the 128GB variant and Rs. 32,999 for the 256GB variant as part of the Flipkart Big Billion Days sale.

In fact, the S23 FE has been available at a discounted price for a while. If you check the Smartprix Price Tracker for the handset, you’ll see that it was available at Rs. 26,999 on September 5, 2024. In other words, the phone was available at less than half the price of the Galaxy S24 FE.

Although the S24 FE has a better display, a faster chipset, and a larger battery, the improvements might not be worth the price difference for most users. Hence, we would like to conclude that the S23 FE offers much more value for money, even if it is available for around Rs. 35,000 after the festive season sale.

However, if you need a bigger screen, a more powerful chipset, and want to record 8K videos at 30 fps, you can’t go wrong with the S24 FE.
