We are a few months away from Samsung’s next big launch and the rumors are already peaking. Turns out the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 is confirmed to get an upgraded ‘droplet’ mechanism on its foldable display. We have seen similar applications on Oppo Find N and Motorola Razr series and Samsung will do the same.

The current generation of foldable phones, aka the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold4, uses a U-shaped folding mechanism on its display. It hasn’t been able to fold completely while still leaving noticeable creases on the display. The display has been classified as vulnerable to damage and no doubt Samsung is already set forth to work on its fix.

With the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 coming sometime in August this year, we just received yet another update about the updated hinge mechanism. Highlighted by reputable tipster Ice Universe on Weibo, the new hinge design promotes a ‘droplet’ shaped mechanism. It means instead of folding to fold the foldable display in a still U-shape, the hinge will form a ‘droplet’ shape inside between the two halves of the screen. It will prevent the development of creases while allowing the upcoming foldable phone to fold flat.

According to the update, the Fold5 is likely to measure 13.X mm when in its folded state. For perspective, the Galaxy Z Fold4 is 15.8mm which goes on to show just how slim the upcoming Fold5 would be thanks to the new hinge design.

It isn’t the first time the new hinge design has been speculated to arrive. With competitors picking heavily on the tech and numerous reports concerning Galaxy Z Fold5 as well, we are likely to see the ‘droplet’ mechanism in the coming months. Final piece of information is that Galaxy Z Fold5 will retain IPX8 water resistance much like its predecessors.
