The Consumer Electronics Show 2023 is taking place this week in Las Vegas, and Samsung is showcasing its 2023 QD-OLED TV line-up there. A larger 77-inch size has also been introduced, along with a smaller 49-inch size that will undoubtedly be less expensive. The 65-inch and 55-inch sizes are still available. No matter the viewing angle, these TVs deliver the highest picture quality, according to Samsung.
The boldest claim made by Samsung this year is that its QD-OLED TVs would have a peak brightness of up to 2,000 nits which is on par with Mini-LED TVs.
The 2023 G3 series’ stats have not been released by LG. A new “light-control architecture and light-boosting algorithms to raise the brightness by up to 70%” are said to be included in the new series. In some testing, the G2 series from last year was able to achieve a peak brightness of about 1,000 nits. That isn’t to imply that there will be a direct 70% increase and that the new TVs will be at 1,700, even if they will still be inferior to the new Samsung TVs at that rate, but rather that the G3 will only be a little bit brighter than the G2.
Moving on, the Samsung S95C also delivers overall improved image quality and color reproduction. The company employed cutting-edge technologies like AI and machine learning.
Samsung is known for emphasizing the gaming capabilities of its TVs, and the S95C is no exception. The TV supports 144Hz gaming, but only PC gamers with top-tier visual cards may use this feature. It has a 0.1-millisecond response time and a refresh rate of up to 144Hz.
The S95C reduces ghosting—on-screen blurring that occurs when images fade rather than totally vanish—and provides calibration and visualization settings not available on competing televisions.
The S95C’s Gaming Hub offers unmatched support for cloud gaming, including the first-ever 4K support for NVIDIA GeForce NOW as well as the availability of Microsoft Xbox, Utomik, and Amazon Luna.
Additionally, the company states that “Samsung OLEDs come with AMD’s FreeSync Premium Pro certification for the ideal OLED gaming experience” for the first time on an OLED TV.
At this point, Samsung and LG are engaged in a battle of certifications and buzzwords; one thing you surely won’t get from Samsung is Dolby Vision gaming, even though HDR games are perfectly acceptable.
On the sound front, the S95C is also not lightweight. It has a 4.2.2-channel, 70-watt Dolby Atmos speaker system. Information about pricing and availability should come in the ensuing weeks and months. Last year, Samsung undercut Sony’s QD-OLED TV, and I anticipate that it will do so again this year.
