Samsung, a leading company in the camera sensors market, has announced its new ISOCELL camera sensors for smartphones. The company has announced three sensors— the 200 MP ISOCELL HP9, the 50 MP ISOCELL GNJ, and the 50 MP ISOCELL JN5.

These sensors will be used by Samsung and several other Android OEMs in the near future. The 200 MP ISOCELL HP9 is the industry’s first 200 MP telephoto lens that can achieve an astonishingly high level of zoom clarity. The other two ISOCELL sensors are likely to be used as a primary camera and telephoto/ultra-wide on mid-range devices.

The 200 MP ISOCELL HP9 is a 1/1.4” telephoto sensor that uses proprietary high-refractive microlens to gather light more effectively. Samsung claims that the sensor has 12% better light sensitivity and 10% improved autofocus compared to the previous generation.

The HP9 excels in low light, leveraging the Tetrapixel technology that bins the 200 MP shot into 12 MP ones, with each pixel size being 2.24μm, to achieve cinematic portraits. Samsung claims that the 4x in-sensor crop can achieve a 12x “optical” zoom when paired with a 3x telephoto.

The Samsung ISOCELL HP9 has already been used on two smartphones: the Vivo X100 Ultra and the HONOR Magic6 Pro. Notably, the HONOR Magic6 Pro uses a cropped 180 MP version of the HP9, while the Vivo X100 Ultra uses the entire 200 MP.

The HONOR Magic6 Pro uses an f/2.6 aperture (due to the crop) and has an equivalent focal length of 68mm. On the other hand, the Vivo X100 Ultra uses an f/2.7 aperture but has an equivalent focal length of 85mm.

Unfortunately, the Vivo X100 Ultra will remain exclusive to mainland China. However, the HONOR Magic6 Pro is expected to arrive in India soon (September or later). And, of course, we will also see other flagships using this telephoto sensor in the near future.

50 MP ISOCELL GNJ

The 50 MP ISOCELL GNJ could be a solid pick for mid-range phones. It’s a 1/1.57” sensor primarily intended for use as a main camera. The dual-pixel tech means quick and accurate autofocus, thanks to two photodiodes per pixel.

This sensor also has a high-transmittance anti-refractive layer (ARL) and Samsung’s high-refractive microlenses, which make it excellent at handling light and reducing distortions.

The GNJ is also about efficiency. It uses 29% less power in preview mode and 34% less in 4K 60fps video mode, which helps save battery. Plus, it has an in-sensor zoom function, just like every other sensor nowadays.

50 MP ISOCELL JN5

The 50 MP ISOCELL JN5 is an updated version of the JN1, keeping the same 1/2.76” size. Samsung says that it’s super flexible, working as a primary, wide-angle, ultra-wide, front, or telephoto camera. The recently launched Realme GT 6 (review) uses it as a telephoto lens.

The JN5 packs a punch despite its small size. Samsung says it’s designed to capture high-quality images in different lighting conditions. This makes it a decent, cost-effective choice for mid-range phones, whether it’s the primary sensor or a supporting one.
