Samsung, a leading technology company, is preparing to make a significant comeback in the extended reality (XR) and mixed reality (MR) sectors after nearly a decade since the successful launch of its Gear VR headset, which established its presence in the virtual reality market. The company has recently published its Q3 financial report, hinting at a new XR device set to debut in 2025.

This forthcoming headset is expected to feature enhanced connectivity within Samsung’s ecosystem, reinforcing the company’s renewed focus on XR technology. This strategic pivot coincides with the Google Play Store’s recent introduction of a dedicated category for XR applications, signaling a broader movement towards mainstream XR adoption.

Samsung Upcoming XR Device

The upcoming Samsung XR Device will feature a partnership with Google and Qualcomm. During the launch of the Galaxy S24 Series in January 2024, Samsung revealed its intentions to develop this device. It is expected that the XR device will utilize the Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset which has recently appeared on Geekbench, showcasing 16GB of RAM and a 6-core SoC, making it well-suited for virtual reality applications.

The headset is anticipated to operate on Android 14 and will be equipped with advanced sensors for environmental awareness, potential health monitoring, and additional functionalities. It will boast a micro-OLED display with high pixel density and enhanced brightness for a more immersive visual experience. Additionally, it is expected to incorporate a feature akin to the Persona Mode found in the Apple Vision Pro.

Samsung’s XR Headset is designed to rival competitors such as the Apple Vision Pro and Meta Quest. It is expected to be unveiled at the Galaxy Unpacked event in early 2025, likely in conjunction with the Galaxy S25 Series. This presentation will enable Samsung to demonstrate a cohesive Galaxy ecosystem, positioning the XR device as a natural extension for Galaxy users.

The industry has recently seen a shift towards lighter augmented reality (AR) glasses that are compatible with smartphones. In response, Samsung may consider launching AR glasses as an alternative to traditional headsets, positioning them as companions for smartphones. This move could establish Samsung’s XR glasses as a significant accessory for Galaxy smartphone users, enhancing their daily experiences with mixed reality features.

Samsung is set to introduce the Samsung S25 Series in January 2025, marking a significant shift as the company may eliminate the ‘Galaxy’ branding, opting instead for the Samsung S25 designation. This series is anticipated to include an S25 FE model, designed as a budget-friendly alternative and promoted as a ‘Slim’ device.
