TL;DR
- Samsung could launch its first tri-folding smartphone in 2025.
- The company’s display division has developed the technology and is ready for its “commercialization.”
- We could also see an entry-level flip phone from Samsung.
Samsung’s been working on a tri-folding phone for a while, but its efforts haven’t materialized yet. In August, the Chinese manufacturer Tecno showcased the Tecno Phantom Ultimate 2 with a dual-hinge design and a tri-folding display. However, while Tecno’s prototype didn’t make it to the market, Huawei launched the Mate XT in September, making it the first commercially available triple folding phone.

Samsung Hasn’t Abandoned Its Tri-Fold Phone

It is worth noting that other Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi, Oppo, and Honor are also working on their renditions of a tri-folding smartphone. So where’s Samsung at? Has it dropped its plans to release a tri-folding smartphone? Well, it turns out that the market leader is still working on a tri-fold phone, and it could launch it in 2025.
According to a ZDNet Korea report, Samsung Electronics plans to launch a tri-fold phone whose screen “can be folded twice,” along with an entry-level flip phone, in 2025. An industry insider is quoted in the report saying, “Samsung Display’s partners have also completed the development of parts for the trifold model and are ready for commercialization” of the product.
Samsung’s MX Division To Take A Final Call On The Launch
However, the final release timeline depends on Samsung’s MX division, which oversees the hardware development and launch. Regarding the entry-level flip phone, we believe that it could be placed in the same segment as the Moto Razr 50 (review) released earlier this year. With a mid-tier Dimensity chipset, the flip-style phone offers a dual-camera setup and a massive cover screen.

Meanwhile, The Company Is Fighting A Sales Slump For Foldables

At present, the company is trying to accommodate the decline in OLED panel shipments for foldable smartphones. As mentioned in the report, Samsung Display has revised its shipment target to 12 million units for this year, which is a significant drop from what the company expected.
For the second half of 2024, “Samsung Electronics has adjusted its ‘rolling plan (R/P)’ for OLED panels for foldables phones downward to 12 million sheets,” the report states. The primary reason behind the slump is the poor sales of the newly-launched Galaxy Z Fold 6 (review) and the Galaxy Z Flip 6 (review). Nonetheless, the company is preparing for an optimistic year ahead.
